While many of their songs do not feature many lyrics and are mostly synthetic instrumentals, the lyrics that are included are extremely illustrative of Zeds Dead’s social identity. The self- determining lyrics of Zeds Dead tracks parallel Hooks and DC’s independent and easy-going personalities, as they are young and simply exploring the world and enjoying life. In one interview, when Hooks and DC were asked what their three favorite things about touring were, they replied with “Partying, finding cool new food spots, and exploring different cities” (Lex, “Interview with Zeds Dead”). Similarly, these social values are articulated in their song lyrics. For example, in their song “One Time”, which was performed at Fallapalooza at UMD, the lyrics…

The Papas were an ancient civilization that started in 700 BCE. This civilization started becoming strong and developed in the foundational time of the Fries. Part of what made the Papas such an intricate ancient civilization, were their ways of building roads, water systems, and their metalworks. These metalworks are what really made them famous. Fatal Femininity Summary

The next page is a collage of words, which we found very empowering and inspiring from various magazines. Moreover, our work does illustrate the matrix of domination and intersectionality because in one of the comics it discusses how even though as a whole were all feminist, we are completely different from one another and face different types of challenges that we both could not relate too. That’s why we have different components to of feminism (Black feminist, Muslim feminist, and Asian feminist.) For the other three pages of our zine we decided to do it on song lyrics we picked “Do It Like A Dude” by Jessie J we picked this song because we feel like this song is about what are zine stands for, which is that woman can do whatever they want and not do what society says they are conform to do. The song is our favorite because the lyrics emphasize power to females. Further in the zine we have a display of a hand-drawn a word bubble that represents all the things that we’ve been called as a woman. Moreover, our theme is about female…

Although Morgan addresses the negatives to hip-hop music and rap, she also highlights what she appreciates and admires about it. The things she values in this style of music is that it offers a rare opportunity for black men to voice their despair, and she values the fact that its popularity provides a channel for a strong voice commenting on their communities. Morgan argues that listeners should hear these sexist and angry lyrics as a sign that large-scale changes that are necessary in the opportunities available to black men.…

    Jay Z's autobiography

    • 393 Words
    • 2 Pages

Throughout the memoir Jay Z almost translates his lyrics to some of his songs for the audience. He includes the popular song 99 problems. “If you're having girl problems I feel bad for you son / I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one” is the line and Jay Z explains it as “In this verse, the bitch is a female dog, the K-9 cop coming to sniff the ride. When I was living my version of this story, we got away – the K-9 unit was late, and the cop let me go. We were back on the road again, hearts pounding, crack still tucked untouched in the stash, when I saw the k-9 unite screaming up the high way going in the opposite direction” (61). He ties this into his past as a dealer which started when he was very young and how he knew that since most people had not gone through what he had, audiences would not understand what he meant by using the word “bitch.” Jay Z says that it is what seems to be the punch line, making it seem like the last word someone gets. He says that most rappers include this infamous line in their songs, “Their voices were big, like their beats, but naturally slick, like hustlers’. The rhymes were crisp and aggressive” (9). This hints to the notion of masculinity needing to be emphasized. He also mentions that he…

Geto Boys, an inspiring group of rappers, truly rebel against the injustices and inequalities that exit within the environment rap was created in. The rappers get straight into how authority and society purposely set certain individuals up for failure and later blame them for just being “bad” people. The lyrics go on about the reality of marginalized individuals trying to survive in the ghettos. The aggressiveness of this song really gets their point across about how they are fed up with the injustice that exists. These rappers face discrimination every day of their lives and refuse to simply take what is given to them and thus, they rebel against it.…

    Jay Z 99 Problems

    • 1581 Words
    • 7 Pages

By this time, it is clear that Jay-Z had gone through tough times throughout his career. He was caught selling drugs several times, was discriminated by the society, spent time in jail, and has “foes that wanna make sure his casket’s closed” (Verse 1, line 2). Metaphorically speaking, he had “99” problems which were important landmarks and may have been major threats in his life. Going through all the conflicts, Jay-Z still survives and stands firm and takes a look at other males with their minor problems—for example, having girl problems. In the chorus of his song, he says that he has “99 problems but a bitch ain’t one, if you are havin’ girl problems I feel bad for you son”(Chorus). The ‘feeling bad’ part of the chorus is not the literal intention of what Jay-Z is trying to tell the males with girl problems. He is being sarcastic and indirectly criticizing them for complaining for such little problems, compared to what Jay-Z went through. Here is Jay-Z who went through life or death problems looking at males who are complaining about little problems—it is almost comical to see them complaining from Jay-Z’s perspective. Through the music video, Jay-Z is sending a message to his audiences that we all have some kind of problems, big or small. He has gone through much worse than people who are dwelling on girl problems—life is not easy, but we all have to deal with it and move…

    Rapp Is Poetry

    • 978 Words
    • 4 Pages

Over the past several years, hip-hop's/music standing has been tumbling. Criticizers of the genre often arguably point at the extreme cursing, degradation of women, and adoration of the "gangsta" lifestyle as major flaw in rap songwriting. However, it is important that these characteristics only describe a small section of hip-hop. Most rap songs are actually very poetic, as they feature the rhythms and verses, poetic devices, and themes that are crucial elements of traditional poetry. Many rappers use the rhythms and rhyme schemes that are characteristic of poetry in their songwriting. Today’s generation expresses of love, death, self-expression, personal, political, and social issues, poverty and riches, and life involvements. They entwine these thoughts artistically and creatively within strong rhythms and captivating tunes that capture the minds of the listener. The mind-set of today’s adolescence can be found within the lyrics of the music that they listen to.…

Both Bruno Mars and B.O.B (Feat Bruno Mars) created a song describing a girl’s beauty. Also, both song artists are in the pop and hip-hop genres. Even though they had the same purpose and genres, they each do a different method in describing how elegant the girl is. Bruno Mars sings Just The Way You Are by appreciating and admiring the girl in a better way than Nothing On You by B.O.B by using musical instruments, style of the song, and the use of great literacy devices within the song.…

Although rap music can also be a source of therapeutic inspiration, popular rap music sadly consists of negative encoded messages that contribute to the construction of identity of many adolescents. Through new mobile media this form of music is highly accessible for anyone to discover and enjoy. When analyzing the lyrics within rap compositions it moves the intentions of a seemingly innocent song to sexual objectification, drug use, and ideals of body image. Messages encoded within this form of media are well thought out in order to fulfill corporate pressures, and consumer demand. These lyrics begin creating provocative messages in order to grasp a consumer’s attention in hopes of obtaining multiple views. These messages then become decoded in two main ways, sexual objectification of women and drug exploitation. Sexual objectification towards women in these songs creates a framework in which girls identify themselves with and in turn can begin to self objectify, leaving a never-ending cycle of misynony. Drug and alcohol use is also a major component in rap lyrics and music videos that can influence young teens to explore various substances in hopes of identifying with a party culture that many rap artists enforce. The visualization of rap music videos is a major influential form of media that is also used to praise particular body types, while putting others inferior compared. This shapes the identity of young girls regarding their views of attractiveness. Lastly, radio broadcasting can also hinder an individual’s sense of identity as the selection of songs played is based off of popularity, allowing inappropriate and exploitive messages to be communicated. All in all when consuming music media an individual should properly analyzed the messages within the piece of music before allowing it’s messages to become…
