Billy Joel was born in 1949, in the Bronx, which is obviously very influential in his music. He grew up just scratching by, living with his divorced mother, working long hours to help make ends meet. He subsequently did not graduate high school, as a result of his excessive absences. He also spent a lot time boxing and spent a noteworthy amount of time in the Long-island bar scene, which further influenced his music. He started piano at age four, and by age sixteen he had already been in three bands. In the 70s, working at this point as a solo artist, Joel released his first recording Cold Spring Harbor, and unfortunately signed a contract with his producer, Artie Ripp, which gave away most of his rights and his royalties for a time period of fifteen years. The album did not do well anyway, and a dispirited Joel began to work in LA as a lounge pianist. Joel’s first top 40 song, “Piano Man,” describes this experience: “It’s a pretty good crowd for a Saturday and the Manager gives me a smile/ ‘cause he knows that it’s me they’ve been comin’ to see, to forget about life for a while/ And the piano, it sounds like a…

During the time span of 1776 to 1844, the opposition to slavery grew immensely in the United States of America. There were many contributing factors and reasons as to why this happened, including both underlying forces and specific events. Some people or groups made efforts to fight against slavery in hopes that it would be abolished completely in the United States. They did so by organizing groups, meetings, and even developing escape routes for slaves—an example is the Underground Railroad. The North feared its practice spreading throughout America. However, there were other people—mostly from the South—who viewed slavery as a positive in society and believed it benefitted the country as a whole. These people didn’t understand that slavery was morally wrong and went against the principles of democracy, and the Declaration of Independence; instead they worried about how slavery could benefit themselves.…

Elvis Presley brought together Americans, and by those means: a culture. In the excerpts from Griel Marcus’ Essay, “The Presliad”, he explores the effect Elvis had on the polarization of Rock’n’Roll and the influence he maintained throughout his career at the cost of being a figurehead for the insatiable American music culture. What originally seems like a Tribute to the “Rock’n’Roll King” Elvis Presley, can quickly be seen as a call out to why he was so influential and to what end did that popularity serve?…

Never say Never was one of the most inspirational movies I've EVER seen, and i don't think I'll ever see one that beats it. Every day i hear hateful comments on Justin, things like " He's gay" " He sounds like a girl" " he's so fake" And all this stuff, haters can go ahead and hate, but if you actually took a second too stop the hating, and listen too the words that come out of Justin's mouth, listen too his songs, watch his movie, I promise you'd see him from a whole new perspective. I always thought Justin Bieber was just some hot Canadian that had a good voice, but he's so much more. He's given up so much for his fans, it's unbelievable. He'd rather sing his heart out at a concert then lay down when he's sick, he puts the people he loves…
