Introduction Various research findings on juvenile crime relate child abuse and neglect to crime. Child mistreatment and abuse in the United States of America have led to the growth in the number of youth gangs. It is unfortunate that while child abuse has been on the increase, its outcomes probably manifest when a child matures. From these studies, it is evident that children who have been victims of sexual assault are more likely to suffer from Posttraumatic Stress disorder (Siegel & Welsh, 2011). Based on reports from the Department of Health and Human Services, there are more than one million child mistreatment reports on an annual basis (Moylan et al, 2010). Therefore, it shows that the country needs to develop strategies in tracking such numbers. It is important to note that the bulk of these cases occur in families and neighborhoods of people with lower social status. Can this data mean that social and economic status of individuals has an effect on child mistreatment? Child mistreatment and abuse, however, has long-term effects on survivors.
