Between now and 30 years ago a lot of things have changed. As it says in the book in chapter one, juvenile delinquency can be determined by the time and place we are living in. Many of us students are too young to know about juvenile delinquency 30 years ago. Therefore nowadays juvenile delinquency is different. In many cases juvenile delinquency can be defined different in different cultures and age groups. The simple definition of it is when teenagers below of age 18 are committing illegal acts. Nowadays our society is more racially diverse. Also according to Bates, in the next 30-40 years, there are going to be more children in the United States than now. If we go back 30 years ago, different music style has influenced youth, such as heavy metal and rap. Within the lyrics there were a lot about drugs and alcohol use, along with death, violence and suicide. So we can see that music played a very big role in youth society 30 years ago. Also video games became deviant in youth lives.
In our generation, all of us have listened to all kind of music and played video games as well. We are all familiar with it and it is not new for you. Kids at the age of 14 already have the newest version of iPhone and electronics. It does seem that the percentage of adults who are committing crimes have dropped where as the percentage between young population who are committing crime have increased. In many times teenagers do not realize what is deviant and what is not. Also I do believe that in many cases it is parents fault with lack of their supervision. Also I want to add that I came from different country (Russia) and for us smoking and drinking was pretty much legal at any age. So juvenile delinquency there is way higher that in the United States.
