What is Juvenile Delinquency? Juvenile delinquency is defined an act committed by a minor that violates the penal code of the government with authority over the area in which it occurs. Are some of America's youth destined to become criminals? Some experts say it is inevitable, that there is a genetic tendency for violence and criminal behavior. Others say that their environment is to blame; I think that it is both. Experts have shown that there are many factors that affect the development of a child's moral code and can cause negative behaviors that lead to lying, violence, and other criminal tendencies and actions. This negative behavior often exposes itself in the form of juvenile delinquency; children participating in acts such as alcohol and drug-use or trafficking, robbery, vandalism, etc. Kalb and Williams say that "a positive relationship between juvenile and adult arrest is confirmed in several studies of adult crime, indicating that juvenile delinquency is the most common pathway to adult criminality." (2002) Psychological issues, physical environment, as well as family structure and relationships are significant risk factors in determining an individual's propensity for this delinquency and the pattern of criminal behavior.
Psychological problems can often be blamed on anything from inherited personality to a negative environment. I.e. Drugs in the home, abuse, racial slurs etc… Genetics and environment are responsible for molding us into the people we are today. But, an inherited predisposition doesn't mean that regardless of what the parents do they are destined to have a problem child that will turn to a life of crime one day.
