Juvenile Detention Centers Essay

Detention Centers are meant to be a temporarily placement for troubled juveniles that have a potential high risk of reoffending or may likely not appear for their trial date. “Detention centers do serve a role by temporarily supervising the most at risk youths” (Ruddell, 2009). Today, the use of detention centers for juveniles are steadily increasing which only mean one thing, crime rates are increasing. The significant of this problem is with the many juvenile centers are they helpful for our troubled teens or do they have more harm? Within this paper I will be discussing the dangers of detention centers and the impact of detention on youth’s mental health.
Juveniles can be placed in detention centers anywhere from a few days to a few month locked away just waiting on a court date. Some of these juveniles can experience physical and emotional stress as they are separated from society, family and friends. As stated in Romans 13:1-7, “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgement on themselves”. Juveniles should abide by laws just as adults and when they don’t there should be consequences however, the same consequences as adults shouldn’t be for juveniles. Teenager don’t have the same mind as an adult whereas, the way they see danger is different. Punishment should be different unless that troubled juvenile is a danger to society. The law should recognize that juveniles don’t have the mental or emotional maturity that adults have so that they can exercise good
