Juvenile Probation Research Paper

There may be different techniques that a juvenile probation officer could use to deter a juvenile from violating their probation. The techniques could be tailored for the personality type or the surrounding circumstances for different offenders. For a chronic repeat offender, it would be important to keep good records so that the officer can measure the success of the relevant processes or practices that have been tried before. While the offender is undergoing counseling or different recommended treatments ,the officer should provide feedback which is as quantitative as possible, that is, to use a scoring method to rate the success of the juvenile in treatment. Interventions should be targeted to individual cases. If the only scholastic
success an offender has experienced is in the sports arena, then the juvenile should be informed that violations of probation may be met with house arrest and/or suspension of his or her activities in school or community sports programs. Evidence based practices have been shown effective at reducing recidivism. The offender should be made aware that violations of probation result in elevated levels of supervision and more intensive programs in the future. However positive reinforcement is very important for probationers. This would be especially true for juvenile probation or who may have lacked positive support in their home environment which may have involved abuse or neglect. Positive reinforcement can include recommendations to the Court that a disposition be modified to be less restrictive as the juvenile experiences success in probationary programs.
