Juxtaposition in Art Juxtaposition can be found everywhere. Juxtaposition is comparing two things that are seemingly very different. It can be seen in pictures and paintings. It can be read in books and poems. The Untitled painting created by Banksy is an example of juxtaposition in art. In the painting, one can see that it is a picture of two children standing on top of a pile of guns. One child is holding a heart shaped balloon and the other is holding a teddy bear. Banksy is an anonymous street artist. It is estimated that he was born in about 1975, in Bristol, England (Buckley). While there, he painted on the West Bank Barrier, a concrete wall put up in efforts to try to stop suicide bombers. At the time that this painting was made, the United Kingdom was involved in the conflicts in Afghanistan. As well, the UK was also conducting military operations in Iraq. Many of Banksy’s works of art include juxtaposition. “Banksy revealed himself to be an artist with a particularly effective voice” (Panero). In the piece Untitled, he portrays two children standing on top of guns and ammunitions. One child can be seen holding a teddy bear. The other child is holding a heart shaped balloon. The painting is meant to show that love can conquer all and stop war. It shows that people can overcome the reasons that they started the wars and love one another.
