Juxtaposition In Hamlet

Set Design As a director I am going to depict Act 1, Scene 4 as a halloween horror/comedy type of movie. The setting is an old barn and its mischief night which changes the plot because seeing a ghost would be somewhat expected because of the day. It’s pretty stereotypical to have some kind of creepy abandoned building in a horror movie so a rundown barn would also express the decaying motif that’s expressed throughout the play. The characters in these movies are typically dressed similar (ie. The Addams Family and Ghostbusters) and are trusting of each other (ie. Stephen King’s It). There is of course also a sense of comedy which I will portray through a juxtaposition with Marcellus and Horatio as well as sound. Their characters are 6’
Hamlet will be a jock (stereotypically the popular people in high school) wearing a purple varsity jacket because purple represents royalty and Hamlet’s popularity is reflecting the royal prince that he is in the play. He will also be wearing black and white converse which would convey that he is both a good and bad character. As well as a yellow hat to symbolize a crown. Marcellus and Horatio are wrestlers so I’d make them wear muscle shirts to make them look like intimidating protectors (like the guards that they are in the play). Horatios’ shirt would be blue to represent his loyalty to Hamlet and also that he is a trustworthy character since later on Hamlet would trust him with his plan to reveal Claudius’ guilt. Marcellus’ shirt would be white to represent safety since he thinks that following the ghost is a bad idea and makes the remark that there’s something bad going on in the town. The ghost is going to be the dead mayor--“king”--of the town so I’d make him wear a torn up black and white suit to reflect that the characters don’t know whether he’s demonic or angelic (in the play the Christian and Protestant theory are both
