I am in the first specialized youth development team in AmeriCorp NCCC history. in this team my primary responsibilities are tutoring , mentoring and coaching at-risk young people. My first six week project was in a tier one school in Denver called West Generation Academy. I spent time in middle school classrooms from grade 6- 8 providing behavioural and academic intervention to the students that were struggling in either area. I am currently in the sixth week of my second project. My responsibilities in this role include tutoring low performing children in grades 1-5 in BACA elementary school, providing assistance in three local Boys and Girls clubs in Pueblo and teaching business, employment and basic life skills to students in Kindegarten…
I should be a member of Florida Leadership Academy because I am a driven person who wants to break down the barriers that others have placed. Almost two years ago, I finally received that news I have hoping to receive for years, I was going to be a United States Senate Page. To most people who hear the title of the position, most people have a preconceived notion that my parents contacted a couple of people to help me out, but that was not the case. Before I received the news, I had spent three years calling people in Washington, D.C. trying to convince them that I was the best candidate for the position. Most of the time, they would often say that I had no chance since my parents were apolitical and that the Senator does not normally select students for program. Knowing that the odds were against me, I still proceeded to email the Senator’s staff every month reminding them who I was and to not overlook me when decisions were made. At certain points, I felt I was fighting a nonexistent fight, but with the drive I had, I persevered onward and was fortunate enough to have been appointed to serve the United States Senate an honor very few students had, especially with my background.…
For the past three years, I have been the Key Club class representative. Throughout my experience, I learned that leadership is essential in volunteer operations, whether providing food for the hungry on a small scale or raising money for people in need. My role as class representative revolved around my ability to attract and retain quality volunteers. I was responsible for delegating essential tasks to the volunteers in a fair, effective manner. As the class representative, I was initially a volunteer coordinator, one of my initiatives was to allow volunteers to choose which tasks they felt most comfortable with. I had to get to know the members and understand their limits and play on their strength .With that knowledge, I was able to identify…
In 1999 on August 3rd I was born in Canton, Georgia. My parents raised me in my infant years in Canton, but we later moved to Pickens County. I attended Tate Elementary, Pickens Middle, and Pickens High. School was always problematic and challenging. My testing scores were always below average and I felt like I was inferior when compared to my other classmates. During middle school I developed depression, gained 200 pounds, and was diagnosed with dyslexia and pre-diabetes.…
I had the pleasure of speaking to Kevin Giffels, an Associate Consultant and Babson alumnus, whom I connected with on LinkedIn to receive insight into L.E.K, from a recent graduate perspective. Per our phone conversation, I received invaluable perspective on the range of work I could be contributing to. I realize the L.E.K is the firm to join if I want to have free range of the breadth of industries and project types. Kevin informed me that he has worked on projects in industrials, life sciences, retail, and healthcare contributing to private equity work, new product entry strategy and market sizing. L.E.K has an innovative and agile approach to projects, which Kevin exposed me to; each case lasts about 4-6 weeks. In my eyes, this is a huge…
I am determined to study law one way or another, and LSPI is the best option for me at this point in my career. My story starts with my parents, as they decided to leave their country and raise my siblings and I in El Paso, envisioning a better future for us. I have been blessed to attended great schools as I was growing up and ultimately ended in UTEP. Why do I want to go to law school? Answering this question requires a brief autobiographical look into my life, where I come from, why I am here, and where I am going.…
As I learned to be a leader, I gained knowledgeable insights in organizing and planning activities for our school. Our school’s student council is the chief, if not only student organization to plan major activities that involve all the student population. This year our student council planned and carried out one of the most successful homecomings in attendance in the recent years of our school. Attendance to the Homecoming dance was almost three quarters of the student population, making it one of the most successful in my high school career. Along with the homecoming dance, our school also plans a spirit fun day, which is a day were all high school students get off to play many games, and participate in many activities. Most of our activities were planned to take place outside, but due to a pop up shower we had to quickly change our plans for inside activities. Through the planning of the homecoming dance, and the spirit fund day, I have learned that there are many more aspects to leadership than I had thought. Even though it was considered a success by many people’s standards, I still noticed many mistakes that could have been prevented. What I took from our planning of homecoming most was leadership, even in successful leadership, there is still room to learn and improve.…
In this 21st century world, the intellectual society plays an important role for communicating and sharing the information. The power of society helps us to collect data which acts as a bridge to our success and advancement in this world. The generosity of teachers, classmates and friends gave me an insight of NJIT.…
Seconds after my coach said "Never let the kid in the blue out of your sight," I felt a rush of adrenaline pervade through me. Her words made me not want to disappoint her. I am a quarter of a way through the 5K, yet numbness has already permeated my calves. Passing the guy in the blue is on my checklist for this meet. In order to achieve the goals set by my coach, I need to focus on every step and every breath so that every move is executed perfectly. I end up passing him near the halfway mark. By then the searing pain has welcomed itself into my legs again. As I am rounding off two miles, I gain sight of my coach again. She has more words of encouragement for me: "Don't let the kid in red out of your sight." By now my entire body is aching, but I manage to follow my coach's command. I overcome my opponent in red and actually end up passing numerous racers to finish the 5K. The short-term goals my coach set for me allowed me to hit a personal record during that 5K. I surpassed my past time…

The multicultural Student Leadership Institute(MSLI) is dedicated to helping incoming freshman from diverse backgrounds acclimate to a college environment. The program focuses on three aspects: one, teaching basic college survival skills; two, developing and fostering leadership skills; and three, using leadership skills in the larger community. MSLI teaches students how to use their skills in the community by having students participate in a wide array of community service. As part of the organization, I helped clean up a park; I went to the Trenton Rescue Mission and help with a lot of their programs; and I participated in the Midnight Run, which provides necessities to homeless individuals around the city.…
This is my last year in middle school and I would like to spend some of my time participating in what Emerging Young Leaders has to offer. EYL’s workshops alone can help build on some valuable life skills. According to, National Center of Education Statistics, “Extracurricular activities help students engage themselves in school and their work.” If I were to be in this program I would not only be able to engage in school work, but will be able to develop skills that will not only help me now, but when I am older. The leadership skills that these workshops teach will be useful years from now, even after I apply for jobs, and am striving to get a promotion. I will be able to feel comfortable taking charge in whatever situation I am put in and that will make for an excellent candidate.…

My first volunteering efforts began in high school at the YMCA, starting as an attendee, to volunteer, and now as a camp counselor. I was so excited to take on a leadership role because it was important for me to be a positive role model for the current students just as my mentors once did for me. When I entered college I immediately enrolled in Trio Student Support Services because of the amazing experience I had in the upward bound program in high school. Trio Student Support Services are a second family. The faculty has helped nurture and cultivate me into becoming a scholar and an intellectual by providing me with tutoring opportunities and countless seminars. These resource has been the primary reason I have been able to excel at Hampton University thus far. I have been on the Dean’s list every semester since I first…
This year I joined Key Club in knowledge of participating in activities that would help the community around me. I even brought my team to the first meeting and told them that this could be a way of team bonding. Not only did we participate in in-school activities but we also got together on the weekends and helped out the community. I volunteered for three months; Saturdays and Sundays, helping young kids improve their basketball skills. Waking up at 8am on a Saturday after a long week of practice and school didn’t seem fun but the reward at the end of the day was pleasing. Seeing the little kids in the morning with smiles bright and attitude full gave me motivation and passion to push through and give my knowledge back to them. I knew I wasn’t in it alone; I had my teammates by my side making it fun and self-rewarding.…
