KT Tape Benefits
With each passing wave, the boat rose to the crest and slammed down. The deck I was standing on transferred those pounding shock waves right up my leg and into my knee. It wasn’t long before I couldn’t walk without pain and needed to sit down. As soon as I had the opportunity, I turned to a proven method of pain relief; I taped up my knee with KT tape. Kinesiology therapy (KT) tape is elastic tape made of tightly woven elasticated cotton or nylon fibers and is applied directly to the skin. KT tape works in many ways but I’d like to highlight three of the key benefits. KT tape reduces pain, provides support, and proprioceptive feedback. My belief that KT tape is a superior product is supported by two facts; many of the world’s top athletes benefit from using KT tape and it has become widely used by chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapists and athletic trainers. In regards to the effectiveness of KT tape as a treatment for pain reduction, 46 independent clinical studies have proven the health and pain relieving benefits of KT tape. The first and biggest clinical effect is pain relief as it decompresses the layers of fascia, this lifting action relieves pressure on sensitive pain receptors just below the skin and allows for …show more content…
Because KT tape reduces pain, provides support, and proprioceptive feedback, I believe it to be a superior product. Its benefits have been recognized by top tier athletes as well as physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, and athletic trainers. Between the increase in blood flow, fluid drain and proprioceptive feedback, there are 46 independent clinical studies that have proven kinesiology tape relieves pain. Pain relief and support are two of the products main claims, with those comes faster recovery and an increase of injury

The iliotibial band can be rested, iced and compressed to reduce pain and inflammation, followed by stretching. Using a foam roller to loosen the iliotibial band can help prevent and treat ITBS. A compression wrap to mobilize the ITB where the tendon meets the knee is also key to reduce the inflammation. Another pain reliever would be a cortisone injection into the area, which is usually helpful, and it can also be curative. But for the more severe and treatment-resistant cases may require surgery to mobilize…

    ACL Injury Analysis

    • 259 Words
    • 2 Pages

The main mechanism of an ACL injury is that the loads applied to the ligament are greater than its ability to sustain the load. Increasing knee flexion has been found to reduce this load experienced by the ligament however, there is no single muscle crossing the knee that is capable of simultaneously supporting the knee from externally applied flexion, valgus, and internal rotation knee movements (Donnelly et al., 2012). These movements, which are the main movements that result in an injury to the ACL, can be seen during sidestepping and single leg landing with the knee near full extension. It is hypothesized that inappropriate postural adjustments are responsible for the increase in joint load when there is little time to prepare for the task (unanticipated) (Besier et al., 2001).…

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) found in the knee connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin) and provides stability to the knee. The ACL prevents the tibia from shifting too far forward and from rotating too far inward under the femur. The recent increase of this injury has parents, athletes, doctors, and coaches in fear. Athletes and parents fear the injury to due the expensive surgery, and the difficult physical emotional and mental recovery. The classic tearing of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament has no contact involved and occurs when an athlete is stopping suddenly, cutting, twisting, and jumping. The athlete…

    SCD Compliance

Sequential Compression Devices (SCD’s) mechanically replace normal muscle motion in the leg via a cuff that inflates and deflates uniformly. This mechanical inflation and deflation keeps blood flowing in the veins and prevents the formation of clots that can result in deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism. SCD’s are used as prophylaxis in patient groups with low to moderate risk of DVT (Brady et al., 2007, p. 256). Patient compliance plays a major role in the effective application of SCD’s. The Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (2007) states:…

    Taping Or Scarcing

    • 176 Words
    • 1 Page

For most athletes, taping and bracing are the way of life. Majority of the athletes have or have had an injury that with either taping or bracing allows them to function normally just like all of the other athletes. No matter the injury, after the rehabilitation and recovery process, the athlete may still need a little assistance and reassurance to completely return to full level of competition. Taping and or bracing greatly reduced the risk of re-injury as well as making the athlete feel a little more comfortable going back to full competition without constantly in fear of re-injuring themselves. But the question is, which is best? Although for majority of athletes for a short while they may need both, but eventually will be able to just use one or the other depending on which is best for the athlete.…
