Kahlo's Essay: Fellow Communist Artist Diego Rivera
Kahlo later became more politically involved and joined the two Communist parties, which was where she befriended and soon married fellow communist artist Diego Rivera. It was an unconventional marriage whereby Kahlo and Rivera kept attached homes and studios in San Angel, but they lived separately. She was unhappy with his many adulteries, particularly the affair with her sister Cristina, but ironically it has been thought that she had equalled if not outnumbered these infidelities with her own. They went through separations and then a divorce, but then remarried in 1940. They lead independent lives for the most part and both continued their infidelities over the years. In 1932, Kahlo produced her more surrealist painting, 'Henry Ford Hospital'

Frida Kahlo De Rivera (1907- 1954), was a Mexican artist whose works “were strongly linked with her own life experiences, whilst also relating to world events, politics and the wider art world.” Kahlo is best known for her self-portraits, they demonstrate her need for self-expression and her exploration of identity. Although her physical features and eccentric costumes are striking and eye-catching, it is her internal life that explodes beyond the canvas. Kahlo’s unique portrait style jumps straight to the art of profoundly felt passions and sorrows. “Juxtaposing the familiar with the strange, marrying naturalistic depiction with bizarre symbolism, Kahlo is able to convince us…

Rivera believed that his friendship with Rockefeller’s family would allow him to add an unapproved picture of the Soviet leader of the time named Vladimir Lenin into the section of his painting that portrayed a May Day parade. However, Rivera did not know that the real decision is with the Center’s building managers, and they hated it. They ordered Rivera to remove Lenin’s image after building management found articles attacking the mural's anti-capitalist ideology. Rivera refused, but he did offer to balance the work with an image of Abraham Lincoln on the opposing side. The managers wouldn’t do it, so they paid his full fee, barred him from the site, and they hid the mural behind a drape. Compromisers, who were supporters of Rivera, attempted to take the work to the Museum of Modern Art, but it was to no avail. Around midnight on the day of February 10th, 1934, Rockefeller Center workmen destroyed the mural with axes. Later, Rivera got the opportunity to recreate the frescoes in the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City, and he did, completing what he had originally started. Never again did Diego Rivera paint in the United States, but he did continue to be active in both artistic and political arenas, all the way to his death in the year of…

When they first met, Kalho showed Rivera some of her paintings such as ‘Self-Portrait In a Velvet Dress’ (1926), Rivera gave Kahlo advice on how she could improve her works and develop originality. This advice from Rivera influenced Kalho’s artistic style by causing her to move away from the gloomy Renaissance-like portraits and develop her own unique and unconventional style of painting. Frida and Diego got married on August 21st, 1929. They had a tumultuous relationship ruled by infidelity. For this reason, Rivera also influenced Kahlo in a negative way and became a subject for many of her works.
