Times were very rough for the Native American Indians during the early 1900’s. Author Mary Crow Dog; a native American, tried to paint a vivid picture of some of the trials and tribulations that she underwent or heard about while she attended boarding school. Ms. Crow Dog tries to help readers better understand what she and many generations of Native Americans endured while attending St. Francis boarding school; which is located in South Dakota. The ethical principal showcased in this case presentation was beneficence. The nurses were not thinking beneficially of the resident in any aspect of their practice. A professional nurse would not consider leaving a floor with only three nursing assistants to care for 100 patients. The nursing assistants do not have the authority to manage a floor, the license to ensure patient care, nor do they possess the required knowledge to assess patients or delegate tasks. The institutional constraint would be the state of severe understaffing. For a facility of one hundred patients to be cared for by only three nurses significantly lowers the standard of care. According to a chart in the Journal of Scholarly Nursing (2010), Ohio standards are to have a ratio of one licensed nurse to every fifteen direct care patients in a nursing home facility (p 91). When I was a young nurse it seemed like problems I saw were continually put on a back burner or not treated fairly. It’s important to be accountable for mistakes. I have worked on a surgical floor for 16 years. On occasion we will be pulled to another unit if they are really short. I was pulled to an oncology floor when I had been an RN for about 3 years. I was not familiar with the chemo drugs and their schedules. But my med sheet had times listed when to hang certain things so I didn’t ask the charge nurse but went about hanging my drugs. Later in the day the oncologist saw what happened and threw a huge fit. I wasn’t told specifically what I’d done wrong but just that I was incompetant and he didn’t want me ever taking care of his patients again. That was hard to hear because most of the time I was told I was great to be around and a great asset to my unit. I asked the charge nurse what I done wrong. She said certain things weren’t compatible and that I had put the patient at risk but she also told me not to worry, she wouldn’t “report” me. In today's society, technological advancements in healthcare has changed the way hospitals provide care and support a comforting environment. Technology has taken over our lives, to the point where many have become dependent on the use of these devices; including healthcare environments. With the use of bedside continuous monitoring, computerized charting, robotics in operating rooms, and many more technological aids throughout the hospital, we as heath care providers are guilty of this too. Until recently, a “healing environment” was not on the top of the list when considering the construction of a new hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the concepts of healing in relation to spirituality. Caring, central to nursing practice as it promotes patient health outcome spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Society sees nursing as a caring profession and it is also a reason why many of us chose this career path. Caring is one of the main reason why I decided to pursue nursing as my profession. Earlier this year in my intro to nursing class, I presented on the Watson’s Caring theory for our class project. It was also where I discovered that Kaiser Permanente whom shares the same belief model. Kaiser integrated the model of Caring Science, also known as the Watson’s theory into their nursing practice. It is interesting how the media has portrayed nurses for years. Years ago the image was of a blonde, skinny female in a sexy white outfit that waits on her male only patient hand and foot. She is there to give him a sponge bath and feed him even thou it is only his leg that is broken but hands work just fine. Now that image has changed because of shows like Nurse Jackie. This HBO show is about a nurse who struggles to juggle her hectic life as a nurse at a New York City hospital. It’s based on her everyday tussles with physician other nurses and her drug addiction. Even though the show has questionable ethical circumstances it undoubtedly shows her compassionate caring nature. “Jackie is smart, caring, respected by her peers and a vigilant advocate for her patients” (Sorrell 2009). However, due to Nurse Jackie’s questionable ethical practices many nursing organizations feel that this portrayal hurts the image of nurses and hinders them from recruitment, retention, and allocation (Nemeth 2011). In which many organization have fought to refocus the community and general public’s attention on what good nursing incorporates. An organization of nurses, named The Truth about Nursing, has given awards to shows for best and worst portrayal of nursing in order to steer Hollywood to more appropriately depict nurses. Registered nurses are expected to uphold specialized skill, safely provide care, and act as an advocate for the patient by complying with the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Under Subchapter I, Sec. 301.401 “Reporting Violations and Patient Care Concerns” defines the nurse’s responsibility to ethically and in good faith, report negligent and suspicious behavior to the Texas Board of Nursing. Over the last few years, states have begun to develop legislation to protect healthcare workers from assault. Ohio is no different. House Bill 450 (HB 450) is a piece of legislation introduced by State Representatives Denise Driehaus (D-Cincinnati) and Linda S. Bolon (D-Columbiana) that is aimed at making the crime of assaulting a registered nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) while performing their duties in the workplace a forth degree felony. HB 450 is technically not considered a new law in Ohio. Similar legislation currently exists and HB 450 would be considered an amendment to existing legislation which protects the rights of firefighters, emergency medical service (EMS) workers, teachers, and law enforcement personnel among others listed in the bill. Section 2903.13 adheres to all other pre-established guidelines that the current law affords other individuals who work in services directed at public welfare. Despite the omission of healthcare providers from existing legislation, other “first responders” are covered by its protections.
