From my results I can see that male users of twitter use this feature more than females. This supports Deborah Tannen’s Difference Theory, which is the idea that males and females converse differently. She claims that ‘status vs. support’ is one (of 6) of the main differences between the ways males and females use language. Tannen states that ‘men see language as a means of asserting dominance; whilst women see it as a way of confirming/supporting ideas’ Her theory can be proven from my results as tweet number 3 from Comedian Alan Carr says ‘How are you today little bastards? Xx’ I think that in this context people will accept his language because of who he is and his identity. Not only this but he actually calls his fans his ‘little bastards’ therefore in this situation he hasn’t offended anyone. The purpose of his tweets is purely to entertain and humour his ‘little bastards’.
On the other hand, Kim Kardashian says ‘Watching my mom now! Couldn’t be more proud!!! Tune into the Kris show now!’ Her tweet clearly shows her support for her mum through the use of both her lexis used and the extended punctuation (!!!), which puts emphasis, tone and prosodic features into the text. This backs up Deborah Tannens theory that women support each other
Gender theorist Zimmerman and West (1975) came up with a theory that also relates to my results as they say’ Men use more taboo words than women’- I can support this with my data andresults
10 by @osnapitzarinow says ‘Bullying is sick! It is something that affects every school and @jordyokeefe is helping @antibullyingpro make a difference! Proud of you x’. This tweet
