In Hindu mythology Kali is a fertility goddess and a goddess of time. Kali is a protector and often protects humans during disasters. In Egyptian mythology Bastet is the goddess of fertility, childbirth, and cats. Besides being in different culture the two gods have some other differences and similarities in their appearance, origin, and role. Kali has a terrifying appearance. Her skin color is originally black, she usually does not wear any clothes, is very thin, and has long, messy hair. When Kali does wear clothes, she wears nothing on top. However, on the bottom Kali is dressed in a skirt made up of arms that have been cut off. On her ears she wears earrings made from children’s corpses. One story of how Kali was born is when the goddess Durga was fighting against demons. Durga became very angry in combat so he created Kali. The material used to create Kali was Durga’s own body and the method Durga used to create Kali was anger. After being created Kali killed all the demons by eating them. Another story is that Kali was born from Shiva’s wife Parvati shedding her skin. Shiva was then created from the material of Parvati’s skin and the method of Parvati shedding. In a third story people were being attacked by a demon named Daruka. The only way Daruka could die is by a female, so to kill Daruka Parvati jumped down her husband’s throat. Parvati then used the poison in Shiva’s throat as a material and used the method of transformation to turn into Kali. After Kali was created she then defeated Daruka. The last version of Kali’s origin is when a demon named Raktabija was attack people like Daruka and he was also attacked gods.
