During the Late Bronze Age of the Near East, major civilizations like Egypt, Hatti, and Assyria engaged with each other politically and economically. These interactions have been captured through a group of correspondence called the Amarna Letters. Found in the ancient city Akhetaten, the Amarna Letters feature direct contact between Pharaoh Akhenaten and other leaders. According to archeologists, Alashiya, a copper rich civilization found in the letters, likely refers to an elite urban center in Cyprus (Priscila). At the time, Cyprus, divided into multiple elite sites, heavily imported exotic artifacts by exporting the resources procured by other secondary and tertiary sites. The material evidence of the island in addition to the correspondence…

Characters are like puzzle pieces in works of writing; they all fit together and connect to the story and the unfolding plot. Every character in literature fulfills a specific purpose. Whether it is the protagonist, antagonist, round, or flat character the author took the time to place him/her within the story so there must be some significance.…

The short story "Araby" by James Joyce could very well be described as a deep poem written in prose. Read casually, it seems all but incomprehensible, nothing more than a series of depressing impressions and memories thrown together in a jumble and somehow meant to depict a childhood infatuation. Like the sweet milk inside a coconut, the pleasure of this story comes only to the reader who is willing to put forth the intense effort necessary to comprehend it. Or like an onion, peeling off one layer reveals yet another deeper, more pungent level. Practically every insignificant detail becomes vitally important and meaningful as the plot progresses, until it becomes apparent that this story is not about romance at all but rather the "coming of age" that marks everyone's passage into adulthood. This is especially apparent in the point of view, the symbolism of the first paragraph, and the character of the narrator himself.…

"Araby," like much of Joyce’s work, is a fictionalized, autobiographical story. On May 14,1894, a five-day charity bazaar called Araby opened in Dublin. The name alludes to Arabia where open-air shops and rows of peddler carts lined the streets in an exciting cacophony. For children living in Dublin, Arabia enjoyed a mythical, mysterious aura. It was a far away place rich with exotic treasures, much different from damp and dreary Dublin. Joyce was twelve when the bazaar came to Dublin.…

Childhood is a time when one has clear conscience, and our life is like fresh morning dawn. It’s a time when one sees life as a new toy, something to be observed and explored. The innocence last until that moment, one day something changes. Life, which was like fairy tale, and suddenly mask falls off and life is no longer as a fairy tale. The story of “Araby” by James Joyce characterizes the story of a boy who is on this verse from innocent childhood to early adulthood. It is the story of the boy who gains consciousness about the world, unlike what he had seen or thought of. The story holds the period of life when each individual is innocent and optimistic about everything. In contrast, when truth comes out and disclosed to harsh realities of life, then one gets the insight of the realities.…

The kama Sutra is the world's oldest book on the pleasures of sensual living. There is no one single author for the text. It was originally compiled in the 3rd century by the Indian sage Vatsyayana, who lived in northern India. Vatsyayana claimed to be a celibate monk, and that his work in compiling all of the sexual knowledge of ages past was for him a form of meditation and contemplation of the deity. Written in a rather complex form of Sanskrit, the Kama Sutra is the only surviving textual account of that period of ancient Indian history. In scholarly circles it has been widely consulted by scholars trying to understand the society and social mores of that period. The title of the text, Kama Sutra, literally means "a treatise on pleasure." Far more complex than a mere listing of contortionist sexual positions, the Kama Sutra provides a comprehensive manual of living for the good life. Although the central character of the Kama Sutra is the citizenly man-about-town, the text was written to be read by and provide detailed advice for both men and women.…

Culture plays such a significant role in human life that no society can (function)exist without it. All norms, value systems, and ways of conducts are the products of culture. Culture determines how an individual should act, dress, talk, eat, be educated, interact, believe, etc. Scholars of human development believe that there is a strong relation between cultural practices and the development of how members of a particular society think, remember, reason, solve problems, act, and behave. In the following research, I attemp to understand the Ahiska Turks’ culture in the Wheaton, Illinois area of the United States and whether they had experienced any hardship in their new land, how they were coping with those difficulties, and whether they were concerned with preserving their ethnic identities.…

    Reaction to "Araby"

James Joyce’s “Araby” is no different than his other works. The story of “Araby” is layered and profoundly complex yet, so are his other works. “Araby” is the story of a young boy who lives in Dublin and is completely captivated by a female counterpart. Something that is quite evident all throughout the story is that this boy, although captivated by this girl, does not once make mention of her name. It seems as if to speak her name would taint his idea of her perfection. For this reason, we know the girl only as Mangan’s sister. The reason the narrator never spoke the girl’s name can be attributed to different things. It is as if he was completely oblivious to her name and rather only focused on her vanity, or rather he merely could not recall her name but only the memories of her beauty. Either way, this goes to prove that the narrator was accurate in stating he is a “creature driven by vanity.”…

Through the years of World War to current day, the Arabs have struggled to create a prospering nation of their own. The Arab states are underdeveloped because of the lack of support from the stronger nations around the world. The most important questions to be asked are why is the Middle East such a mess? How can the United States help? And How are they helping themselves? The Middle East has gone through years of hardship even though they were one a dominant culture.…
