THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Nowadays, the use of petroleum products is an essential thing that is obtained from the crude oil as it is processed in oil refineries. Some of its by- product include Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), fuel oil, gasoline, kerosene and the like. These products are highly consumed by humans. Reports revealed that people staggered almost 90 million barrels of petroleum every day (Adair, 2015). The over-extraction and over-used of rock-oil have caused negative effects and damaged the Earth’s biosphere that resulted in the pollution of air, land, and water that contribute to climate change. Although there is a newly-alternative fossil fuel that is formed from natural processes, still, it cannot …show more content…
Talahib (Saccharum Spontaneum; Wild Sugarcane, Kans Grass) is a kind of grass growing up three meters in height; leaves are harsh and linear 0.5 m to 1 m long, 6 millimeters (mm) to 15 mm wide. Panicles are white and erect measuring 15 centimeters (cm) to 30 cm long, with slender and whorled branches. Also, it is one of the most galore grasses found in the country. In the early days, it was supposed to have medical value. However, in this paper, it aims to prove that talahib extract itself is an alternative solution for petroleum gas for it is proven that talahib has a lignocellulosic material, and it is one of the most promising biomass that produces bioethanol. To convert it to biofuel, it must undergo pretreatment to denigrate the lignin. Lignin is a substance binding the cells, fibers, and vessels of the plants. It keeps the cell wall from collapsing and it makes the plant woody. Also, through BIT, it is intended to lessen a number of unsafe fumes being released in the combustion of the unadulterated gas that greatly contributes to the problem of air pollution and global …show more content…
• Bioethanol – it used as an alternative to gas, it is ethanol produced from plants such as sugar cane.
• Combustibility –pertains to how easily a BIT will set on fire.
• Density- the quantity of mass per volume.
• Distillation – is a chemical process of separating two liquid components that have different boiling points.
• Ethanol –colorless volatile flammable liquid.
• Fermentation – it is a process that converts sugar into acids, gases or alcohol.
• Flammability –the aptitude of BIT to burn fire or ignite.
• Heat – it refers to how high the temperature will produce from the BIT.
• Lignin - serves as cell wall for protection. Binding the cells, fibers and vessels which constitute wood and the lignified elements of plants which need to be removed.
• Lignocellulose – it is referred to plant dry matter (biomass), known as lignocellulosic biomass. It is the most abundantly available raw material on the Earth for the production of biofuels, mainly bio-ethanol.
• Smoke emission – the process of releasing smoke.
• Talahib – (Saccharum Spontaneum; Wild Sugarcane, Kans Grass) - is a grass native in the Philippines, growing up to three meters in height and used as the primary ingredient of
