Karch Kiraly
Karch Kiraly is number one in the “Top U.S Players of All Time” for indoor and outdoor beach volleyball. He is Volleyball’s highest governing body and the greatest player in the 20th century. He has won three national championships under head coach “Al Scates”. However, all this success came from hard work during high school, and college. To begin with, Karch is presently still working with volleyball. He was six when he first started. His dad, Dr. Laszlo Kiraly, had encouraged him to start playing the sport. Then at age 11, (1956), he went to his first beach volleyball tournament. By the time Karch entered Santa Barbara High School, he was already enrolled on the varsity team, since his father was the coach. When Kiraly joined, the Dons (Team Name) got to the championships twice. Then, as he went into this senior year, the team was undefeatable. Never losing at any tournaments, and making gold medals at every championship. Even after all his accomplishments over his time in college, Karch didn’t stop there. In 1978 he enrolled at UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) where he majored in biochemistry. Since he kept playing volleyball, he got to lead UCLA to the “NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship”. After the four years in college, The Bruins (Team Name) compiled a 123-5 match record with tiles in 1979, 1981, and in 1982. This made him earn All-American Honors all of the four years, and he was also awarded the “NCAA Volleyball Tournament Most Outstanding Player” in two of the years. It wasn’t long until Karch became a professional. He joined the national team in 1984. As he played, he got even more things, like the foundation for the “Two-man” serve reception system created by Doug Beal in 1983. Not only that, but during the first year that he joined the national team, he led the U.S. National Team and won the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, even though he was the youngest player on the team. After years of even more accomplishments, he

David was the U.S. Olympic Team. Herb Brooks handpicked group of college kids. The players mostly were from Minnesota and most played for Boston University or the University of Minnesota. They were talented and experienced, yes, but they were true amateurs who were playing hockey and attending classes. Brooks was portrayed in the movie “Miracle” as authoritarian, but I don’t think he was nearly as harsh as his Soviet counterpart Tikhonov. There was also a lot of hockey talent on this team as evidenced by how many ended up playing very successful careers in the NHL after their…

I signed up for volleyball. I have only had two practices. Hitherto, I acquired the skills of passing the ball, serve overhand, and set the ball. I failed to attend the first practice. As a result, I do not know how to properly serve underhand. Practice is every Friday night from six “o” clock to six forty-five at Anderson Farm Park. Moreover drills, we play games. One game I relish is where a person serves the ball to the other side of the net and tries to hit someone. If they are not successful, they have to sit were the ball landed. If they do strike someone, they earn a point. Volleyball is an enjoyable experience.…

One thing Finny was known for was his extraordinary natural talent. At Devon he dominated in every sport and game. His strength, agility, grace, and fluidity showed in any physical activity he participated in. Over the summer, Finny longed for an entertaining game to play. He picked up a medicine ball and declared we would be playing a new game about the war, “blitzball”. Although the game was extremely in favor of the defenders, Phineas managed to defeat the odds of the game of his own creation. I remember watching in amazement as Finny’s abilities shone. It was not just his amazing skill that made him a victor, it was also his winning spirit. Phineas showed unmeasured sportsmanship when playing with others; he even got a few awards for it. But the countless awards don’t encompass Finny’s love for sports. He was the embodiment of a champion.…

Playing sports has always been something that I enjoy to do, so I decided to play a new sport. And that was volleyball. As a new volleyball player I didn’t know the complete sport of volleyball and how it was played, therefore I began to do research on different successful volleyball players. That is when I came across Destinee Hooker and when I did it made me more desirable about the game and about how to make myself a better person. I instantly started to watch YouTube videos of her from when she was in college at Texas A&M and when she became a professional volleyball player overseas and for our own country. As I began to watch her, I started to follow her throughout the volleyball season. Furthermore I learned the basic steps to volleyball by watching her compete in the games she played. In more detail she was also participated in the London Olympic games for two thousand and twelve which really influenced me as an athlete. Even though the US team did not bring back gold for our country, Destinee as a player brought gold to my heart because she gave it her all in every…

As a freshman, with previous experience playing volleyball in middle school and at the beach, this essence of competition was very attractive to me and so I tried out and made the junior varsity team. Last year, during my club season, after sitting on the bench for the first part of the year, my coach recognized my improvement and hard work and gave me the starting role for the second half of the season. The little voice in my head telling me "you'll never make it!" or "you're not good enough!" inspired (and continues to inspire) me to persistently improve every aspect of my playing during practice and such an attention to detail, combined with my inner motivation to improve, lead to my…

Diving on the ground to get the ball up, setting the ball outside, and having your hitter slam the ball into the opponents side of the court. That is what volleyball is all about and why I have such a love for the game. I am here to tell you about why this sport is so important to me and also why it plays a very big role in my life. For me when I play it’s about being a team, going out there and showing yourself and the crowd that you know what you’re doing. In the time you are on that court you leave everything behind you and focus on one thing: playing your game no matter the outcome and leaving everything on the floor.…
