A 3-DIMENSION LITERARY SCRUTINY OF HAGIBIS’ “KATAWAN”

INTRODUCTION Released Katawan (Body) in 1994 by Vicor Music Corporation, a compilation of songs recorded for the label by the Hagibis in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. The song “Katawan” is still popular until now thus it only proves that the album was a smash hit and that the all-male sing and dance group from the Philippines is so famous. Is it probably because of the song’s distinctive folk-rock genre? Or the group’s muscularity, freshness or singing style? Or plainly because of the song itself? But whether it is on any of the abovementioned factors, it is undeniable that once you explore the song itself, you will discover a mixture beliefs, convictions and emotions. The literary paper scrutinizes not only the song’s lyrics, but also its music video as equally important, in light of the three literary vistas: traditional, modernist and post-modernist. It aims to extracting the general theme guided with the applicable theories and methodologies. The course of this literary paper is divided into four parts. Part One: Author Dependent Interpretations. This section comprises backgrounders and Moral-Philosophical Approach. Part Two: Text-Dependent Interpretation. This presents the application of Formalism (Elemental Exploration) and Structuralism (Binary Opposition). Part Three: Reader-Dependent Interpretation. This segment explores the piece employing
Psycho-analysis.
Part Four: Literary Conclusion and Synthesis. The synthesis and the grand theme are presented in this part. The author’s insight and wisdom highlight and conclude the article. Following the four parts of interpretation is the Works Cited which confirms the published and electronic references used, and the Appendix where the complete lyrics of the song is featured. A photo gallery is adjoined for a more meaningful literary experience. The author believes that the ultimate purpose of this paper, that is enriching
