Kate Chopin's Short Story 'The Storm'
Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis on February 8, 1851 and died on August 22, 1904. During her lifetime she kept a diary which she wrote in. One of Kate Chopin’s entries in her diary was a short story called The Storm. In the short story The Storm there are four main characters, these characters are Calixta whom is married to Bobinot, Bibi which is the son to Calixta and Bobinot, and Alcee who is married to Clarisse who is away on vacation during the short story. The short story is about two of the characters committing adultery during a thunderstorm. Bobinot and Bibi went to the store to grab some things they needed and while they are at the store a huge storm begins therefore, Bobinot and Bibi decide to wait it out. During this storm Calixta
is at home fussing, tending to the house, and waiting for her husband and son to get home however, gets distracted when she hears a truck outside in her yard. She goes to help them get inside, who she thinks is her husband and son and finds that is Alcee trying to get out the storm. She lets Alcee in and they began to talk then out of nowhere a thunderbolt happened sending Calixta into Alcee’s arm which soon lead to them committing adultery. After the storm was over Alcee left and Bobinot and Bibi returned home to Calixta greeting them at the door with kisses and happiness. Alcee was just as happy that he sent his wife Clarisse a letter telling her she can stay on vacation longer if she liked. Calixta and Alcee feel no guilt for committing adultery on their significant other. Chopin knew her story would never get published therefore, she did not try because of the unguilted adultery in The Storm. However, The Storm finally got published in 1969 which was after Kate Chopin had passed away (Toth).
