Desirees Baby takes place in Louisiana before the American Civil War. The Valmonde family adopted Desiree on the day she was found at their front gate. the family didn't mind not knowing what her race exactly was. Therefore years later Desiree gets married to a man named Armand Augbiny. They have a baby together to realize the child begins to show evidence of not being white. Armand believes its must be desirees unknown ancestors. Armand rejects both his wife and child because they rant white. Later on in the story Armand finds a letter from his mother saying he was the one with mixed ancestry not Desiree. The theme is identity and racism Desiree who was being judged for being African American even though she wasn't. Armand enforces the idea that once again a new identity is being imposed upon Desiree even if it doesn't fit her. Armand decided to kick Desiree out of the house with the baby to leave them strained with nothing but the clothes on their back . The storm Most likely occurring in the late 1800s and taking place in the deep South, the story gives an interpretation of an adulterous affair between Calixta, wife to Bobinot and mother to four year old Bibi, and Alcee, husband to Clarisse, during a terrible rain storm. Bobinet and Bibi are inside a local store when attempting to leave they notice storm clouds approving the town. Deciding to let the storm pass, they remained inside. Meanwhile, Catixta is at home soon realizing the storm is approaching she begins running about the house closing windows and doors. Seeking shelter from the rain, Alcee approaches as Calixta Steps on to her front porch. As she stepped outside, Alcee rode in at the gate. By providing a terrible storm chopin creates a creative setting for this chance meeting. Chopin uses the storm to force Alcee inside Calixtas home. The theme in the story is love and women's sexuality. In the sentence the Rain was over chopin ends the storm, the affair and the story. All of these women are married, they end up not being completely happy and satisfied in their roles.
calixta, shows no clear signs of being unhappy or miserable in her marriage. however she is much more happier after stepping outside the boundaries of married loyalty. After her encounter with Alcee, she is much more loving, kind housewife and mother. this indicates that the established roles of marriage were restricting and unpleasant for her, and she felt more fulfilled stepping outside of those bounds. Louise too felt restricted by marriage but when she learned of her husbands death, she was filled with a sense of freedom from marriage. Desiree is happy in her marriage, until her husband rejects her from a race she wasn't. All of these women were happier outside of the accepted, establishment roles as wives in the 1800s and found happiness outside of those
roles.
