Kate lives during the 1820s in northern England. Much of this book deals with girls wearing only dresses, riding horses and carriages, and being very proper. Today girls don’t only wear dresses, there are cars and being proper does not describes today’s world. This helps set the tone for this book because it makes Kate a different person, have different feelings and attitudes than if she were placed into today’s world. Henry questions Kate, “Why do you refuse me?” (258) and Kate replies, “I know what loving me will cost you,” (258). Kate loved Henry all her life but knew that he would be better off without her because his family was higher in status than hers. Henry also loved Kate but she would never budge, Blackmoore, teaches the reader that when you desire a good thing that is possible for you to have, take the risk of having it. Good things like love only come so very often, so if there is a risk you have to make, always take the
