Kateri Tekakwitha Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Indian to be called venerable. She is the daughter of a Christian Algonkin woman and a pagan Mohawk. In addition, she is the first Native American to be seen as a sage.. She was born in 1656, in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon. She suffered a fatal attack of smallpox when she was 4 years old. In the end, they had to accept the fact that she is no willing in her marriage.Only 19 years old, Katrina Tekakwitha converted to Catholicism, taking vows of chastity and promised to marry only Jesus christ. Her decision is very unpopular with her parents and the neighbors. Some of her neighbors began to rumors of witchcraft. In order to avoid persecution, she escaped to Montreal with a Christian community of the local people.
