Katherine Character Foil
When exploring through the traits of characters within all well written stories or even actual people, the major changes within them began with small little choices or events and the repercussions snowballed upon each other, and rock the character down to their very core ideals. With this truth set in place, it becomes evident that casting judgement upon another due to their reaction to an event is something inherently wrong. As the events that they have experienced up to that point are something that no outsider could ever comprehend. Two examples of characters who have had a series of small events compile gradually to form a major change over time are Katherine from the shakespeare play Taming of The Shrew. And Katherine from the modern interpretation …show more content…
Within both stories those pillars become challenged through this foil’s actions. Her foil being a man whose sole intent is to marry/date Katherine, this man’s name is Petruchio/Patrick in Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You respectively. With this first meeting the beginning of the end takes effect as the character of Petruchio/Patrick immediately comes in with a completely different mentally than hers, with these differences realized by both parties a verbal battle ensues. In the Taming of the Shrew Petruchio berates her, anything she says he figures out a way to manipulate against her *quote the line where he says tongue in your tail* this instantaneously flusters her, this act of him one-upping her with everything she says rocks her mindset of being intellectually superior to all those around her. In the modern interpretation Patrick, instead of berating her brings quippy remarks, showing his confidence and not allowing any of the rude things she says get the better of him, with this act of showing how unphased he is even after her attempts, it too brings this pillar of intelligence idea into question within herself. Even after one interaction between the two Katherines the foundation of her final character has been set in place, one is attempting to break her down for his own gain …show more content…
In Taming of The Shrew Petruchio declares that he will marry Katherine, despite her protestations the wedding still gets set in motion. Once the fabled day comes to fruition it’s found out that the groom is nowhere to be found, when that is realized Katherine begins to break down and cry, as the reader it doesn’t take much to establish that she has begun to care about this man who forced himself into her life. With people seeing her show emotion and that the one time she’s begun to open herself up to another person he turns around and betrays her. She begins to lose the pride she had in herself as an independent and strong person, embedding the seed of self-doubt that she is not any of those things. In 10 Things I Hate About You something quite similar occurs, Katherine gets brought to a party with Patrick and as the night drags on she drinks more and more alcohol. In her inebriated state she begins to do regrettable things, which breaks down the bad girl image everyone has of her. Once she gets dragged out of the party and is sitting in the car with Patrick she attempts to give him a kiss. Patrick refuses the kiss, this refusal of the kiss further breaks down her pride by instead of being pleased with that choice she regrets it, thinking this one person she has shown herself to doesn’t like her. With this pride crumbling, soon the things which she prides herself upon begin to come into question, such as the

In the beginning of "The Taming of the Shrew", some say Shakespeare portrays Katherina as a very shrewish figure. Others may argue that she is not shrewish but just a very strong willed person. At the end of the play some people say she is transformed into a very kind and gentle person, while again others will argue that she is not "tamed" but just putting on an act to "show up" her younger sister Bianca, whom has always been more beautiful and charming. Kate is "like a wasp, like a foal, like foal that kicks from his halter; pert, quick and determined, but full of good heart." 1. This statement made by one author, shows clearly that he does not see her as shrew-like, even at the beginning of the play. The same author states that at the end of the play she has not really transformed, rather she has just fallen in love with Petruchio, in essence she is free from torment because she is no longer seen as the shrew.…

Katherine is saying this to please Petruchio in front of everyone. This shocked the people because they think that she is changed. She knew the game Petruchio was playing on her and she decided to follow along with it. From Rachel De Watcher’s Power and gender in The Taming of the Shrew, she explains how Petruchio's taming was successful or not. She goes on to talk about how that her closing speech is strangely cold and generalized. “But this very coldness puts the success of Petruchio’s taming into question. Perhaps Katherine is merely saying what she knows he wants to hear for a quiet life?”(3). Katherine’s speech was in fact cold, but it seemed that Katherine only said this because she didn’t want trouble with Petruchio. Katherine makes her speech really believable and nice so Petruchio is pleased.…

In the Shakespearean play The Taming of the Shrew, Katherine is perceived to be a “shrew” because of her uncontrolled hostility and impudent behavior. Some believe at the end of the play Petrucchio tamed Katherine. However, she was not tamed. Katherine was rude to her father because he tried to control her life. Katherine so badly wanted to be in charge of her own decisions and for that reason she would not become tame for any man, even her father. Katherine also shows no sign of trying to make ends meet with Bianca throughout the whole course of the play. Katherine began to obey Petrucchio only because he took her needs away. When Petrucchio treated Katherine poorly, she changed because she had to; she never lost herself or her old ways completely. Katherine is both static and dynamic in the sense that she changed in some ways when the circumstances left her with no choice, but deep down she stayed true to herself.…
