On January 16, 2014, the ESPN documentary series, 30 for 30, introduced a new installment called The Price of Gold, which focuses on the unorthodox incident that involved Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan, two well-known figure skaters in the 1990s. Nancy Kerrigan was assaulted while training for major figure skating competitions, and it was shown that the people closest to Tonya Harding were involved with Kerrigan’s assault. This film explores what happened from Tonya’s point of view and the struggles she had to face mentally, legally, and emotionally. This scandal between Harding and Kerrigan shows that sports can be a beneficial outlet for individuals, but it can also have unfortunate, and even unexpected, downsides when being involved in…
Cheryl Swope begins her book, Simply Classical, by introducing the reader to her two children, whom she and her husband adopted. It was not long after adopting the children, who were twins, that Swope and her husband realized they were different. Both children suffered from a multitude of handicaps that made it impossible for them to develop on their own like normal children. These first chapters describe the effort, as well as the various methods, that Swope employed to help her children lead lives that were as normal as possible. Many times throughout the book, Swope lauds Classical Education, as the key to all her children's successes, but the time and effort that Swope put into training her children…
A stranger can be anyone they want to be. It is a human’s job to find a mutual connection or walk away from that stranger. Melanie Smooter changed her personality’s real quick when she ran off to New York. The first level consists of the big five traits to assist with connecting the dots (McAdams, 1995). Openness is where a human is creative and imaginative. Melanie was creative in creating the new fashion trends, hello she was popular enough to date the mayor’s son. Extraversion is classified as being a talkative or outgoing human. Melanie had low extraversion when she was antisocial toward her family, not even a postcard. Neuroticism may be a disadvantage because moods can fluctuate and anxiety disorders are common. The neuroticism brought on my many panic attacks, especially when Melanie was at the Coonhound cemetery and sent mixed emotions. At the night of the county fair, she attempts to be cordial with her hometown friends for being a train wreck at the bar the night before. Jake asks for her hand to dance, and she friend’s zones him. She runs off to the Coonhound cemetery apologizing for never saying goodbye to their dog. Jake appears and they discuss the past mistakes and end with a kiss. Melanie states she cannot do this and runs off with regret. Conscientiousness personalities belong to the organizers and solicitous people. Melanie appears to have it all together financially and…
No one has a personality that doesn’t change. This change in personality can cause people to have two sides to their personality. “People have two sides, a good side and a bad side.” (The Tourist) The two sides are: one bursting of goodness and one filled with evil. This difference in a personality is either helping or hurting themselves and their peers. Many stories contain characters that exhibit these bipolar, two-sided personalities. This inconsistency is part of what makes them interesting. The reader expects a character to act in a certain way, but the double-sided personality causes them to do something unexpected. Many authors use this to grasp the reader. In his book, Fifth Business, Robertson Davies demonstrates that Dunstan Ramsay, Boy Staunton, and Mary Dempster each have a good side, and an evil side to their personalities.…
Characters all have different traits and personalities,_____ ? In the novel Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, Joana is one of the main characters in the book who is struggling to live in the harsh conditions of the war. She does not know the location of her family and she stumbles through the harsh winter alone, until she wasn’t alone anymore. Joana’s character has many traits that stick out in the story, she’s calm in tough situations, she’s brave, and she smart.…

Gwen Harwood’s work frequently focuses on woman being demoralised by society’s practices that reduce her to a lesser being. A common worldwide value that Harwood rejects as the normality in life with her poems. Harwood battles against the traditions that she believes support this downgrading by continually returning to the issue. Due to Harwood’s existence in a time where women of Australia still fought to vote and for a pay check to match a man’s, Harwood too displays her support. “The Lions Bride” is centred on the subject of marriage and entails the ugliness of the situations that are specific to women. This remains relevant to the modern world because of the ongoing struggle for equality. By using a wedding as a platform to highlight societies imposed traditions on females she seeks to shock the conventional expectations by demonising the widely romantisied event. Harwood extends this and questions treatment of women in the world before any vows are made.…

Advancements in technology have produced a world in which one is constantly looking at images or watching a video. Whether for enjoyment or to fill a void caused by boredom many people scroll through their phones aimlessly viewing a multitude of images. Maggie Nelson discusses these notions of spectating in her narrative titled “Great to Watch,” where she presents two different views of what “spectating” really means. She first views it as an action that provides a false sense of empowerment where one passively views through constant scrolling. Later she claims that active spectating gives one a mechanism to become aware of both themselves and the environment. Malcolm Gladwell presents his idea of the environment in his narrative titled “The…

Many renowned psychologists have created theories and opened flood gates of debate on the ever controversial topic of personalities. What is it? And where does it come from? Kurt Vonnegut The author of the short story who am I this time portrays his views on this subject through round characters which hold a symbolic role throughout the work. “I don’t want to be the ways I am…the only experiences I’ve had have been in crazy dreams of movie stars (Vonnegut 21. In relation to the women of the modern times, societal views of beauty have caused many of them to drastically change their physical image to conform to the changing norms placed by society. “Has social media affected your personality” article posted December 21st 2010 by Jess Moore of USA today, states that “there’s no doubt that social media affects our personalities. Humans are social creatures. Our interactions determine our socialization, and our personality determines how we interact.” In other words we are affected by what we see which triggers our desires and in turn has us (humans) interrelating emotions and actions that are not of original decent. Whether conscious or sub conscience, many who have personality disorders will not realize that they do nor will the willingly accept that they nor the person they are mimicking or trying to obtain with their unrealistic personality has one either. “Once the shows over, says Lydia whatever you thought harry was just evaporates into thin air”. “I don’t believe it said Helene” (Vonnegut 25. This idea was first described by German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. As the series begins and progresses, more characters are introduced of both genders as well as similar and different age groups. The main character is then not only forced to deal with these new characters on a one-to-one basis, but also live and share the same rooms together.…
Just as no two people are alike, no two personalities are alike. Each person’s personality is unique to the individual to whom it belongs. A person may share the same traits as others, such as family members, and while there may be similarities in traits, each individual will have different patterns which will help to make up a different personality (Feist & Feist, 2006). A personality is made up of different characteristics which help to define a person and make them an individual. Besides traits and characteristics, a personality can be made up of a person’s thoughts, feelings, actions, and behavior.…
