Like Kathleen, Danny’s letter was just as short but it did not bother Danny, he knew that his father trusted him.
Suddenly, the next week came and another letter had appeared at the door, Kathleen was excited and could not wait to read it. Tearing into it, Kathleen saw not one piece of paper. Yet, clinging to the inside of the envelope, was her father’s necklace. As her fingers slid over the cold silver, memories of her father flooded into her mind. Thinking back, Kathleen could see her father lifting her out of the car after their late evening drives. Or when the two of them would stop at Mcdonald's for a milkshake after he picked her up from school.
After seeing the necklace Kathleen did not know what to think. Why did her father send her his necklace? Was he hurt? Was he captured? Was he coming home? She did not know she only could hope that whatever happened, her father would be alright.
When the next morning came, Kathleen shook as she turned on the radio to listen in hope of good news but nothing came. As she clung to her father’s necklace, she heard this over the radio…

In order to pass time before bed, Linda knitted a new sweater while listening to “The Andrews Sisters” on the radio. In fact, this was Linda’s favorite way to pass time. Also, it helped her keep her mind off of John and the war that was tearing at this family’s hearts.
