Counsellors adhere to a code of ethics that is supposed to prevent the counsellors’ biases and attitudes towards diversity and multiculturalism, but sometimes this is not enough. A counsellor’s best tool in the counselling process is themselves and that is why there are so many skills, rules and competencies that a counsellor needs to adhere to (Cormier & Hackney, 2014).
In the case study of Katlego, there are many biases and negative attitudes that a counsellor might have towards him. He is a black homosexual man who takes recreational drugs and cheats on his partner. Katlego’s story and background can be accepted and used to the advantage by both the counsellor and client in the counselling process.
In this assignment, there are numerous aspects of the case study that are analysed. The numerous counsellor biases that are experienced in a general sense and the way these impact the counselling process are analysed. A self-awareness argument is made in terms of personal feeling towards the case study and the different ways of accurately combating these biases are discussed.

Culture is generally used to refer to customary beliefs, traits, and social norms of religious and social groups. It is important to understand our culture and how it affects the relationships we form with others. Counsellors need to realise and understand that our assumptions of human behaviour differ from those assumptions by others. Culture biases could cause a client to be misdiagnosed and it could also cause stereotyping, misconceptions and wrong assumptions of the client.
