This is the most important quote in the entire series. With these six words, Katniss Everdeen sets into motion the events of the entire Hunger Games trilogy. Katniss shouts these words out at the very beginning of Chapter 2; almost immediately after a Capitol representative announces her little sister Prim’s name as a tribute in the 74th Hunger Games. Katniss volunteers to take Prim’s place in the Games in order to spare the life of her sister. Despite there being thousands of names in the reaping, and this being the first year Prim has her name in it, the Capitol representative inexplicably chooses her name against overwhelming odds. Ever since her father’s death, Katniss has been supporting the family. She is willing to make incredible sacrifices for her family, so she volunteers without hesitation. After the Hunger Games, in which she had to put on a new persona and act for the Capitol, she is finally returning to her old self whilst on the way home. However, the Games has a profound impact on her identity. In the exposition of the plot, her only concern is for herself, her family, and Gale. As the narrative progresses, she gains qualities she did not possess beforehand. These new qualities include an appreciation for life, and the acknowledgement of its frailty. Prior to the Games, Katniss’ life revolved around keeping her family safe and fed. Following Katniss’ immense gain of wealth because of winning the Games and therefore no longer needs to hunt, she becomes confused as to whom she is, because the daily hunting and bartering for survival was such an integral part of her
