Katniss v Bella

(introidk) Both the Hunger Games Series, and The Twilight Saga focus on love, and war. They both center around the main characters of their novels Isabella Swan(Twilight), and Katniss Everdeen(Hunger Games). Both girls are similar with their love triangles, both that’s just about where it ends on the surface. Katniss Everdeen, and Bella Swan are actually more alike than other people would believe.

Agency refers to the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices. The novels Twilight Saga, and The Hunger Games Trilogy main characters, Bella and Katniss respectively lack agency. Both characters throughout the novels are being controlled by a greater force. Bella’s boyfriend Edward, not only controls her but Bella cannot act independently she needs Edward to feel secure in her choices. Katniss is controlled by the capitol, or whoever is giving her any sort of order. The difference in both agencies is that Bella has a little more independence than Katniss. Throughout the Saga Bella makes choices, she chooses Edward over Jacob, she chooses to keep her baby, and she chooses to become a vampire. It can be argued that Edward controls Bella, but in reality Bella just can’t be without Edward, and makes her choices dependent on that premise of something to do with Edward. Which is why Bella lacks agency she doesn’t make any independent choices unless it is to peruse Edward. Katniss on the other hand throughout the whole series makes three independent choices, to take her younger sister Prim’s place in the Hunger Games, defying the capitol by attempting to have her, and Peeta eat the berries, and her choice in Mockingjay to not execute President Snow. Katniss is a pawn in all books of the Hunger Games series. She doesn’t even choose between Gale or Peeta, the controlling powers place her and one of the boys in the same place and place the other boy elsewhere, so she ends up with the one that is at hand. Even after her last grand act of defiance, at the end of the last book, Katniss allows herself to be controlled. Although both characters lack agency, Bella’s lack of agency comes from her passive nature towards Edward, while Katniss lacks any source of agency.

In The Hunger Game Series, and Twilight Saga they both have a lot of action packed scenes. In all action scenes in the novels there are usually two roles; the protector and the victim. Often in a romance novel the female is the victim, and her male partner comes into save her. Twilight has this, Edward is the chivalrous vampire who protects Bella from all dangers—even herself. Bella is seen as a weaker character that can’t even stand on her own two feet without tripping over them. She doesn’t get a chance to protect anyone until she becomes a vampire in the very last book, and even then she has to call upon a whole army for extra protection against the Volturi. However, in The Hunger Games Katniss is the sole protector in all books. She protects Peeta, Gale, her family, Rue, and all of Panem in the course of three books. Katniss is strong, and is seen as a strong character throughout all books.
