Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. Instead of your immune system fighting of illnesses, it attacks the myelin sheath surrounding the nerves. The myelin sheath is destroyed, and the damage prevents the nerves from transmitting signal to the brain. It spreads very quickly and is considered a medical emergency in its most severe form. The syndrome usually begins with weakness and tingling in the lower extremities; feet and legs. It is an aggressive syndrome and quickly moves its way up the trunk to upper body and arms. In very rare cases, first symptoms are noticed in the face and arms. Guillain-Barre disease can be difficult to diagnose early on because the signs and symptoms are similar to other neurological diseases and vary from person to person. Most people with the condition require hospitalization to receive treatment, and at worst, the syndrome goes from weakness to paralysis.…

Kawasaki disease is a rare disease of childhood. It is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. Kawasaki disease causes swelling and inflammation of the walls of the blood vessels. It also affects the mucous membranes, lymph nodes, and the heart. The heart problems are the most worrisome part of the disease. The inflammation of blood vessels in the arteries of the heart (coronary arteries) can lead to aneurysms. An aneurysm is a weak area in the blood vessel that balloons out. Such aneurysms can lead to a heart attack. This may happen even in young children. It is very uncommon.…

Prevention really is the best cure. Meningitis is the inflammation of the fluid and membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord, known as the meninges. The inflammation is usually caused by an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain or spinal cord. There are three main types of the meningitis infection: bacterial (both infectious and non-infectious), viral, and fungal/environmental (including parasitic). Meningitis may develop in response to a number of causes, usually bacteria or viruses, but can also be caused by physical injury, cancer or certain drugs. Meningitis can be hard to recognize and can affect anyone, anywhere and at any time. We chose the disease, meningitis, because we have personally experienced the devastation this…
Meningococcal meningitis is a bacterial form of meningitis, a serious infection of the meninges that affects the brain membrane. This disease causes brain damage and can be fatal if it isn’t treated properly. The bacteria Neisseria meningitidis has the ability and is known to cause large outbreaks of the disease. Meningococcal disease is possibly fatal and should be viewed as a medical emergency. Admission to a hospital or contact with a doctor is necessary and isolation of the infected patient would not be necessary. Antibiotic treatment is needed and should be given as soon as possible.…
