INTRODUCTION
Background: The Progressive Era is the name given to the time period that spanned from the late 1890s to around
1920. This was a time when journalists and writers exposed many of the social, economic, political, and moral problems in the United States, and middle-class reformers attempted to solve them. Progressive reformers sought to eliminate corruption in government, regulate business practices, address health hazards, and improve working conditions. At first, the movement began mostly at local levels, but later it expanded to state and national levels. Progressives drew support from the middle class, and supporters included many lawyers, teachers, physicians, ministers and business people.
