Keystone Of Volunteering
One of my passions is volunteering to assist others, which I have done in a variety of ways. During a prior semester, I had spent a few hours a week volunteering for an on campus food pantry, recently started to help stunt the increasing poverty levels of college students. The keystone of my volunteering activities was when I had traversed across continents, to a small eastern country in Africa known as Malawi. I had stayed there nearly a month, in that time, I had mentored the youth; delivered blankets, food and other resources to an orphanage; befriended the natives, and many other things. Helping others and making other human lives easier is what makes me tick, and I desire to continue helping in various ways. Whether five miles or five

You made a very good point with your comment about being able to understand the needs of people from other geological backgrounds. This made me think about needs from a volunteers’ prospective. How important is it to meet the needs of the volunteer? So, I began to research this and came across a guide about this very topic called, “Strategic Volunteer Engagement: A Guide for Nonprofit and Public Sector Leaders.” In it, author Rehnborg (2009) and her assistants resolved that, “no framework, regardless of how thoroughly conceptualized, is a substitute for getting to know the unique needs and concerns of each volunteer” (Concluding Thoughts section, para. 5).…

Service is a passion of mine and I love to volunteer in my community through various service clubs, and scholarship pageants. At church, I've been the President of my Youth Group and a Volunteer Assistant Counselor and Staff Assistant for two years at our church girls’ summer camp. For nine years, I've been a Girl Scout and completed service projects that allowed me to earn my Bronze and Silver Awards. Now, I am working on my Gold Project, putting together a pamphlet with information about our support group campout and other resources for the Exstrophy community, which I plan to distribute…

Although being a leader of my school’s robotics team has not changed my career goals, it has greatly influenced my goals in the terms of community service. Since joining the team, I have volunteered for far more volunteering opportunities than I would have if I were to do them alone. For example, as team we have packaged thousands of nutritional meals for families in Central and South America. Furthermore, we have volunteered at other STEM related events in our immediate community. One of our larger service programs is the NXT Repurpose Project, which repurposes outdated robot brains, so that they are along with Lego robotics kits to less fortunate students across the world. So far, we have donated robotics kits to students in Ghana, Kenya, and Serbia. In June this summer, we plan to travel to Kenya for approximately two weeks. While we are there, we will personally mentor and teach students how to build and program robots one-on-one, so that they will be exposed to STEM concepts with fun! Finally, being a leader for my robotics team has pushed me to commit myself to serve my community locally and globally more and more. Therefore, my goals are to volunteer for Living Lands and Waters, the American Red Cross, the AmeriCorps, Engineers Without Borders,…

There are many people who are not as fortunate as I am and the least I can do is lend a helping hand to make their life better. Last summer, I spent a week in Joplin, Missouri with a group from my church making repairs to a house owned by a woman with a special needs child. The owner was extremely grateful for our volunteer efforts and appreciated everything we did. The satisfaction gained from making a positive difference in her life gave me the inspiration to sign up for another week long mission trip planned for Colorado Springs, Colorado this summer. In addition to gaining a broader perspective of life by providing services outside of Wisconsin, I have also assisted local underserved individuals through community outreach on multiple…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

One of my most meaningful service opportunities was volunteering in the Utah Special Olympics last June. I spent the morning and early afternoon managing the Track and Field events of the Summer Games with friends and leaders from my church. This experience gave me a welcome change of perspective and an opportunity to focus on something greater than myself. On this day, I had the privilege of spending time with some of the kindest people I have ever met.…

Growing up, I have always known that I wanted to do more for the world. I wanted to help people that were hurt, disabled, or disadvantaged. I’ve always thought the world could be better if we stood up for one another and make each other’s days. My parents taught me while growing up that giving back is always more important than all the material things I could receive. I became a member of a girl scouts pack near my house and we always assembled fundraisers and donated what we made to local charities. When I decided I didn’t want to undertake the responsibilities of a girl scout, my dad introduced me to Special Olympics.…
