After the death of Khubulai Khan, the four uluses divided forming their own independent states. These four powers remained autonomous, until the territories internally began to divide and ultimately fall apart. The first of the khanates to collapse were the Yuan Dynasty and the Ilkhanid, while the Chagatai and the Golden Horde were able to stay in control relatively longer. It is most likely that these two uluses were the first to dissolve because Mongol steppe and traditional life never prospered in those regions, but rather these areas were allowed to maintain their old cultural identity (Morgan, 2007, p. 175).…

HES 2330 Thermodynamics 1 Semester 1 – 2013 ASSIGNMENT 2 Due Date: 29 May 2013, 5.00 PM Dropbox: Mailbox 83 (HES2330/HES4330) – Level 8, ATC Building 1. A container filled with 45 kg of liquid water at 95oC is placed in a 90-m3 room that is initially at 12oC. The thermal equilibrium is established after a while as a result of heat transfer between the water and the air in the room. Using constant specific heats, determine (a) the final equilibrium temperature, (b) the amount of heat transfer between the water and the air in the room, and (c) the entropy generation. Assume the room is well sealed and heavily insulated. 2. An ideal Otto cycle has a compression ratio of 9.2 and uses air as the working fluid. At the beginning of the compression process, air is at 98 kPa and 27oC. The pressure is doubled during the constant-volume heat-addition process. Accounting for the variation of specific heats with temperature, determine (a) the amount of heat transferred to the air, (b) the net work output, (c) the thermal efficiency, and (d) the mean effective pressure for the cycle. 3. A gas turbine power plant uses solar energy as the source of heat addition (see Figure for detailed setup and operating data). Modelling the cycle as a Brayton cycle and assuming no pressure drops in the heat exchanger or interconnecting piping, determine: (a) the thermal efficiency; (b) the air mass flow rate, in kg/s, for a net power output of 500kW.…

Question 1 Peng & Lau, a firm of accountants, recently purchased a laptop computer from computer retailer Ace Computers Ltd for $5,000. The laptop was acquired for use by the auditing staff of Peng & Lau during the times when they are working at the premises of clients of the firm. A term of the contract between Peng & Lau and Ace Computers provides that the liability of Ace Computers in relation to any defective computer is restricted to the cost of repairing the relevant defect(s). Soon after the laptop is acquired, it is discovered that, because of faulty wiring, users of the laptop receive an electric shock if they use the laptop while the batteries of the laptop are being recharged. One consequence of this problem with the laptop is that Peng & Lau lose the opportunity to tender for a highly profitable audit job in relation to a new client. What legal rights (if any) do Peng & Lau have against Ace Computers Ltd?…

When looking at human experimentation during the twentieth century the nations that come to mind are Japan, where scientists amputated limbs from subjects only to reattach them to other parts of their bodies; Russia, where the Soviets tested odorless poisons on prisoners with the goal being not having it detected postmortem; or most infamously Nazi Germany and the heinous experimentation performed on the Jews. What most don’t realize however is the United States has its own history of unethical “studies”, “vaccines”, and “projects”. One such was the MKULTRA project, which has become notoriously known for carrying out some of the most unusual and sometimes inhumane experimentation financed by the American government.…

Defective products, which cause damage, can give rise to liability and this traditionally arose under the common law. However, the common law approach places the burden on the claimant to establish that the defendant owes a duty to him, was in breach of that duty and that they suffered damages as a result of that breach, and it may not always be straightforward to establish causation, especially when the defect arose on part of the manufacturer. Claims may also arise in Contract law under statutory devices, such as the Supply of Goods Act 1979, the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 and the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977.…
