INTRODUCTION
Introduction to khat:
What is khat?

Khat, or qat,; Somali is ( qaad) is a flowering plant native to tropical East Africa .A Khat is a green-leaved plant that has been chewed for its stimulant effect for centuries.
Khat contains the alkaloid called cathinone, and amphetamine-like stimulant which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite,
It is a controlled or illegal substance in many countries, but is legal for sale in somalia

khat originated in Ethiopia. It spread early on to Somalia,
Djibouti, Eritrea and the Arabian Peninsula. It is also grown in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, the Congo, Malawi, Zimbabwe,
Zambia and South Africa.

1.b) Khat is Financial burden-time and Money spent on chewing Khat?
 Khat is a financial burden to the economic growth because, as a Puntland we import thousands of kilos of Khat (Leaves) and pay out $.100,000 dollar (roughly) , per day. For that reason, it effects the Socio-economic states of Puntland, particulary the khat chewers.

2. What are the main social effects of Khat use in Puntland?
THE MAIN SOCIAL EFFECTS OF THAT USE IN PUNTLAND: Poverty
 Family and Community breakdowns (e.g divorce, domestic violence, etc.)
 Illiteracy (e.g lack of education, drop out of education, etc.)
 Crime (e.g killing, theft, Cheating, etc.)
 Irresponsibility (e.g, unemployment )
 Creates bad friends

3.Should Khat be prohibited in Puntland? If yes how? If no how to minimize its social effects ?
 Khat could not be prohibeted once in Puntland.But, it could be minimized through, a long-term awareness, and social Mobilization towards the effects of Khat chewing.
