Kidney Heist Myths
One of the most unbelievable urban legends that I remember was The Kidney Heist. One of my favorite things to do is searching creepy stories or news and share with my mother. I remember When I read this article about the kidney heist, I was shocked. A traveling businessman was in a bar and was bought drinks by a stranger. He woke up in a tub covered in ice, and couldn't remember what happen the night before. Then he recognized that his kidney was being removed, the strangers steal his kidney to sell on the black market for transplants.

The story of Kidney Heist reminds me of one incident that happens to me a few years ago. As a teenager, I usually going out with my friend every day. There are a ton of news about murder and rob around my area,

La Llorona is a legend that began around the 1550s. It has been told to children by older ones for hundreds of years. Her real name is Maria. There are some who believe it to be true, but whether they believe or nor not it still remains in memories of many people. There are different stories about the La Llorona; here is someone that believes it’s true. La Llororna as told by Stephanie Cassias is said to be a southwestern folktale. The legend is said to be about as young Native American women named Maria. One day a man came riding into town she lived and ended up marrying the women. Another interesting story was “Anguiano Religious Articles”. This was a very creatively written story which not only utilized a large amount of cultural depictions and imagery, but it was also very religiously humorous. Told from the perspective of a woman, the story describes her hatred toward a store owner. Before journeying to the store, she is told that this store owner is a “crab ass”. The story is very short, but humorous…

Fear can change people from bad to good. And sometimes the people are so worried about being cool they don’t even act like fear is not even a tragically developing change. The fear that teens have seeing their family hurts and their friends shot sometime shows them that they shouldn’t be on the streets to be cool. The main goal of being on the streets is to show that you are man enough to be friends with everyone.…

“The Throwaways” is an article about four young confidential informants who had their lives cut short because they decided to cooperate with law enforcement and help bust drug dealers. Every single informant’s fate led 6 feet underground. Rachel Hoffman was a twenty-three year old girl who had plans to go to culinary school and open a new type of rehabilitation center. Rachel was found dead the next day fifty miles from where the cops were supposed to be tracking her every move. Lebron Gaither testified against a man in court and was then ordered to try and buy narcotics from the same man he had just testified against; he was tortured, shot with a handgun as well as a shotgun, ran over by a car, and then dragged by a chain into the woods. Shelly Hilliard was caught with a half ounce of pot, threatened with prison, and agreed to be an informant. Hilliard’s body was found on fire beneath a…

The most interesting short stories that caught my undivided attention were: “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot” by Robert Olen Butler. These stories were both fascinating and intriguing in the sense that they made me feel like if I was the actual character. You could feel the pain and anguish the characters felt, even the desperation. It got to a point that I felt pity for the protagonist whom in both stories where narrating. Here we can see how someone can feel so desperate that they think the only way out is by taking their lives. Both Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Robert Olen Butler created an incredible form of fiction that makes you question if the scenes in the stories can truly happen in reality.…

In this paper I will compare the robbery rate between two metropolitan cities which are Dallas Texas and San Diego California using the preliminary annual Uniform Crime Report (UCR) generated by the Federal Bureau of investigation (FBI) from January to December 2008. The Uniform Crime Reporting Program (UCR) defines robbery as the taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear.…

An article published in The New York Times after the 10th victim was found emphasized the precautions that local L.A. people were taking because of the killer. This article entitled “Fear of the ‘Hillside Strangler’ Pervades in Los Angeles Area” specifically addressed the concerns of prostitutes and one crossing guard (Lindsey). Both groups felt at risk because the victims had all been women by themselves. In response, the prostitutes began to travel in pairs or even large groups and take extreme measures like writing the license numbers down. These women were already being scared by the media coverage of the killings and were in turn adding to the fear. Articles such as this one illustrate the scene to be one of mass terror and panic, which it likely was. However, it is exaggerated to perpetuate just how terrified everyone was. Prostitutes and working women only represent one group of the vast population in the region, so it is unfair for the media to imply that fear…

    Foundations of Mythology

Playing in the woods as a young boy with my two older sisters they would employ the boogey man scare, I would run home scared out of my wits, cry to mommy to save me and she would tell me “It’s just a myth, there is no such thing as the Boogey man” so I learned that a myth was what we called the story liars told. I live in this world of 2011, knowledge and facts are a way of life and I find myself encountering myths of a different nature, Applebee’s giving away free food, Apple giving away free products just copy and re-post. Seems if a story is documented in the least a scientists may be more likely to entertain and research the ideas unexplained in the story. However I think the best way to approach a myth is with an open but not naive’ mind.…

People come to this city all year and embrace the culture and atmosphere to experience different events. Like the Essence Festival, Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras, or just to tour the French Quarters. But there is so much crime poverty here beyond the beauty of the French Quarters, drugs, homelessness and other situations often go unnoticed by tourists. When walking home from school one day after practice trying to get home because it was getting late, and I saw two men arguing with each other and the other man pulled out a gun a shot the other man right in front of me. I covered my eyes until the gunman left and then I ran home to tell my mother. I didn’t want to go to school anymore; it took me at least three to four week before I would come out side again. It gave me nightmares and I kept seeing it flash in front of me over and over again. Another time I went to the grocery store for my mother just to pick up a few things, upon leaving the store, I was walking up the street and this guy pulled a gun on me, telling me to “give me your money”. I dropped the things that I had in my hand and gave him the money and then I ran home. I was so out of it; when my mother asked me “where is the food”, and I responded to her “I was robbed” and she called the police. The police came out to take the report and wanted me to give a description of the guy. But all I could remember was that he had on a white tee shirt and blue…
