When lifting children, the same principles as for lifting any object should be applied. However, the potential for the child to move whilst being lifted must be considered. You should be fully aware of the risk of spine and back muscle injury and always follow the correct procedure. One quarter of all accidents involving members of staff in schools are caused by moving heavy objects.…

Children Today Need Better Health Introduction As a kid, it was always fun going outside and playing in the yard, riding the bike around the neighborhood, climbing trees in the front yard, and even picking fresh vegetables to eat out of the garden. Today’s children do not go outside and play as much as they used to. They are too caught up with playing on cell phones to notice that there is a whole other world behind their screens. Children today are in worse health shape than those in the 1900s. Physical Fitness First, children in the 1900s had better physical fitness.…
Children are the windows for the next generation. They are those who consume as well as reproduce resources left by the older generation. According to the law of nature, children are the ones who are supposed to lead to future world and ones for the continuity of next generation. In this 21st century, with new lifestyles including technology and more occupied society, younger children are increasingly becoming more vulnerable than older generation and one of the reason is obesity. The famous American musician Will. i . Am Claims, obesity as one of the factors that can actually knock America out cold, along with the lack of jobs, diabetes, homelessness, and lack of good education. According to the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, the number of Americans who suffer from chronic back pain is 100 million (AAPM). Fortunately, there are many options out there that may help these Americans with their back pain. Relief ranges from surgeries to injections and from chiropractors to physical therapists and all in between. Having been diagnosed with scoliosis and degenerative disk disease since 2006, I have personal experience with most all of these treatments. Anyone suffering from grave pain of the spine needs to understand the difference between physical and chiropractic therapy before deciding which one to select as the correct therapy to relieve his or her pain. Although chiropractic work therapy and physical therapy both seem to be effective in treating diseases of the back, physical therapy seems to be more effective.…
This shouldn’t come to a surprise to most, that America holds the number one position for obesity. (Wintrup) Not only Americans as a whole but the children. More than one of five children between the ages of 6 and 17 are considered overweight. This is something that needs to change immediately. There are too many health risks at stake for these young children including: diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, and poor academic performance. (Alan) In 2005 a study found that children today may have shorter lives by two to five years than their parents because of obesity. (Palmer) Childhood obesity alone is not the only issue facing children today, although being overly large may prevent the child from living life to the fullest. However, the co-morbidities relating to childhood obesity are the real killers. Hypertension, type 2 diabetes, respiratory ailments, sleep apnea, and depression are just some of the common problems linked directly to obesity in children (Henry). Others…

As with any disorder it is important that certain needs be met within the school setting to insure the proper education arrangements’ are being met to insure the best education possible for the student. In order for the school to provide the care needed for a student with a musculoskeletal disorder, first they must analyze the disorder, understand the…
In very young children, curves caused by early onset scoliosis can sometimes self-correct, without treatment. This curvature of the spine which may have its onset in a baby’s infancy, but are most frequently discovered in adolescence. Usually, early onset scoliosis is related to idiopathic. Approximately 80-85% of scoliosis cases are classified as Idiopathic scoliosis, which is broken down into more subcategories as infantile, juvenile, adolescent, or adult depending on when onset occurred. Numerous studies have shown the condition is more likely to be adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, positioning the curve more often to the right-side and affecting more girls than boys. Also, it's more common in females by 2:1 ratio, however, when curves in excess of 30 degrees are evaluated, females are more frequently affected by a ratio of approximately…
Most spinal curvatures are usually detected during school screening exams, by the school’s nurse. Some indications that a child may have scoliosis include uneven shoulders, a prominent shoulder blade, uneven waist, or leaning to one side. The diagnosis of scoliosis and the determination of the type of scoliosis are then made by bone exams and sometimes even X-rays to evaluate the magnitude of the…
Scoliosis is defined as an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. It will cause either a C-shaped or S-shaped curvature of the spine. Scoliosis is a disease that attacks the muscles and ligaments of the spinal column causing a sideways twisting and rotation of the spine, ribs, and pelvis. There are many different branches of this disease, but the most common type is idiopathic scoliosis. Idiopathic scoliosis is usually found in children between the ages of ten and twelve. Girls are more likely than boy to have this type of scoliosis. Treatment of scoliosis is based on the type of scoliosis, the person’s age, how much more the person is likely to grow, and the degree of the curve. Scoliosis can be viewed from two extremes; from harmless to horribly deforming.…
If you are a child and have scoliosis, you are usually going to the doctors every four to six months to keep your scoliosis in check. The treatment most commonly used for children are braces. The brace is used when you have a spinal curve degree between 25 and 40 degrees, and you are still growing. Though the brace can’t actually reverse the damages of scoliosis, it can help to prevent it from getting worse. ( Osteoarthritis Health Center Scoliosis, 2 ) Another option is surgery. If your curve is between 40 and 50 degrees, you are considered for surgery. The surgery cannot straighten the curve all the way, but it can get it pretty close to normal. In the procedure, metallic implants are used to correct some of the curvature and makes sure it is in the correct position until the bone graft can be placed. The bone graft creates a rigid infusion within the area of the curve. It is most commonly referred to as spinal fusion because it joins the vertebrae together. ( Osteoarthritis Health Center Scoliosis, 3 ) It is also highly recommended that people with scoliosis be physically active in case they have the surgery. This can help speed the recovery process along, but also it is good for your…

Chronic low-back pain is referred to, simply as pain in the lower back. It is considered chronic if it has been present for more than three months at a time. Chronic low back pain can come from injury, disease or stresses on different body structures. The pain coming from the lower back can range from aching, burning, tingling, sharp or stabbing. Eventually, this chronic illness can lead to or be the cause of back stiffness, decreased movement of the lower back and difficulty standing straight up (North, 2009). I chose to research this topic because both of my parents have chronic low back pain. My father’s is from his job – construction worker – and my mother’s is from family history – her mother had it. Therefore, I am at much greater risk of having chronic low back pain in the future, especially because my future career path as a physical therapist requires much lifting. I currently do have mid to low back pain. My job at home as a physical therapist aide requires much lifting, walking and standing. I also played volleyball for fourteen years of my life and the stresses from that on my lower back has been unbelievably painful.…
