“ Metropolis” directed by Fritz Lang is a science fiction, futuristic style film. It is about the socioeconomic differences in the futuristic city of Metropolis, between workers and the men who designed and ran the city. Its main character Freder is the son of a man who manages Metropolis and has been privileged to live a very luxurious life until he sees a beautiful women, Maria, who leads him to beneath the city, where all the workers of the city toil. He sees the cruelty and deaths of the workers and the machines that do this to them. He decides that he must become the voice of the workers. All the while this is going on, there is a rivalry between Freders father, John Frederson and Rotwang, an inventor for the city and an archenemy. They both at one time loved the same women, Freders mother, until she chose the richer man, John, and then died during childbirth. Rotwang since then has been on a quest to create a new love, so he creates a robot and once he sees Maria he knows that he is going to transform her into his new robot love. Rotwang and his robot woman encourage the underground workers to revolt which leads to the cities power generator bursting and flooding the whole city. Finally Rotwang and Freder battle for Maria and the people of Metropolis, on top of a cathedral and Rotwang ends up falling to his death. Freder becomes the mediator between the workers and the minds of the city. In the end Freder gets his girl and there is peace between the working class and the upper class. The main message of the film is, “that the mediator between brain and muscle must be the heart”. This illustrates the differences in classes of Germany at the time between the Weimar Republic and the people. The Weimar Republic became the center of power in Germany and during the Republics regime there was much turmoil and “economic chaos.”(Ladd, 88). This is represented in the film between the men who run the city and the lower division of…

As an 10-year old girl growing up in Tanzania, I was fascinated and dumbfounded to see my aunt go to the hospital with a huge tummy and come back with a small crying baby because the "doctor worked his magic". In my formative years, I saw the power of medicine as it healed the lives of those closest to me: doctors reversed my brother's acute asthmatic attack, fixed my cousin's fractured femur and drained my brother’s subdural hematoma to save his life after a head trauma. This is why I chose to pursue a career in medicine.…

The Komodo national park lies in East Nusa Tenggara province in the Sape Straits between Flores and Sumbawa. The only Access to Komodo village is by boat from Labuan Bajo on the northwestern tip of Flores or from Sape on the east coast of Sumbawa. Komodo, the largest island, has a countryside dominated by a range of rounded hills sloping along a north-south alignment at an elevation from500 to 600m. The coastline is lopsided and characterized by numerous bays, beaches and inlets divided by headlands, often with sheer cliffs falling vertically into the sea. Padar is a small, narrow island, which lies directly east of the coast of Komodo. It also has topography, which rises steeply from the surrounding plains to between 200m and 300m. Further east, the second largest island in the park, Rinca, is separated from Flores by a narrow strait a few kilometres wide. The topography of the southern part of the island is dominated by the 667m Doro Ora massif, while to the north the steep-sided peaks of Gunung Tumbah and Doro Raja rise to 187m and 351m, respectively. As with Komodo and Padar, the coastline is generally strong and rocky although sandy beaches are found in sheltered bays. The mainland components of the park lie in the rugged coastal areas of western Flores, where surface fresh water is more abundant than on the islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar. Geology reflects area vulcanism, with Pleistocene(a really old rock) and Holocene(an even older rock) deposits forming the principal geological units. Deposits are generally resistant volcanics, volcanic ash, conglomerates and raised coral formations.…
