Should “Killer Robots” be banned ?
Killer robots have really become a concern for people nowadays. What is a killer robot? What will happen if they really exist? What will happen to humanity? “A killer robot is a fully autonomous weapon that can select and engage targets without any human intervention.” (No Author, 2014)1. There are some people who refuse the presence of killer robot and some others who support it. People who refuse it believe this robot will not have heart and start killing as what they have ordered. However, others also believe that killer robot can help human troops from a dangerous situation by replacing them. So, should “killer robot” be banned?
When did the idea of invented a killer robot first emerge? It all started on the Second World War. There were two types of autonomous robots: unmanned tanks by the Soviets and remote-controlled mines by the Nazis. (Stutman, 2013)2. Thus, autonomous killer robots were not created in this past few years but those ideas had emerged a long time ago even before the World War 2 started.
At that time, the technological advancement of autonomous robots was limited compared to today’s industry. With a huge investment and the massive progress of computer and technology, military robots industry nowadays has grown very fast. This has become an interesting and attractive business for some country. There are about 90 countries especially United State of America that have been developing unmanned vehicles. They spend most on UAVs (unmanned air vehicle) rather than sea and ground vehicle. United States of America is the biggest spender on unmanned vehicles for approximately $35 billion. (Bowler, 2014)3.
