However, the first recorded ball and racquet game was first played by monks located somewhere in southern France around the beginning of the twelfth century. They usually played with their hands and hit the ball against a wall. However, the monks soon developed crude instruments with which to strike the ball. They also developed the first type of playing court, which was usually the monastery courtyard. It is there where they devised a crude net with a rope to divide the playing areas. Over the next few centuries, the game spread to several countries in Europe, and it developed several variations. By the start of the nineteenth century, the game became popular and competitive in Great Britain and quickly developed into today's modern tennis, which now consists of many organizations with numerous levels of competition for all ages and skill.…

Bowling was first played by the Germans in the third century. Every German peasant had a kegal, which was a small club. They carried it for protection. They would place it on the ground and roll a stone to try and knock it over. If a peasant knocked the kegal over, they would be considered free of sin. Eventually as more people caught on to this sport, they would use a wooden ball and more than one pin. This was played as a sport and not a religious practice. Later on in history, people were betting on bowling matches and they set a limit on the amount they could bet. Over time, bowling spread into many other countries and moved indoors. Lanes were created which were made of wood or sun-baked clay.…

Dr. James Naismith created the game of basketball in 1891 when he was the physical education teacher at Springfield College. Naismith yearned for a new sport that his students could play indoors because New England winters were bitterly cold. Therefore, he created basketball and it only took fourteen days. The original basketball teams started in 1801 where they had nine players instead of five. Also, the baskets were made from peach baskets. After each score a player had to climb up then retrieve the ball. Since this was complicated, iron hoops were introduced in 1893. Naismith probably would have never guessed his sport would become so popular, but now thousands of teams across the world play his…
