Kindertransport Play Analysis

Kindertransport by Diane Samuels is based on the life of a kindertransport child. Kindertransport, which is German for children's transport, was organised before WW2. The UK took in thousands of Jewish children from countries such as Germany, Poland and Austria so that they could be looked after by foster families. The play is centred around a young German, Jewish girl called Eva who is sent away by her mother Helga to England. She spends the rest of her childhood living with foster mum Lil and eventually forgets about her Jewish roots. She falls out with her real mum and decides to change her name from Eva to Evelyn.
