Hernan Cortes and his soldiers went on many different expeditions in order to expand their knowledge on the unknown world. In Imperial Spain, J.H. Elliot examines the history of early modern Spain from the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, to the reformation of the Spanish government by the first member of the Bourbon dynasty. According to the author, at the start of the 15th century, Spain was internally weak, hopelessly divided and isolated from the continent by the Pyrenees. Yet, by 1492, Spanish society experienced a tremendous transformation which allowed Isabella and Ferdinand to unify the country, secure the largest transoceanic empire the world has ever known, and for a few decades become the strongest nation in all of Europe. Unfortunately, Elliot asserts, whatever dynamism animated this miraculous ascendancy did not last very long and Spain became once again a second or third-rate nation. The personal rule of the Catholic Monarchs, Elliot argues, is what made Spain a dominant world power; when the Habsburg dynasty ascended to the throne, their cosmopolitan imperialism led them to neglect the nation that Isabella and Ferdinand had begun to create and led to the decline of Spanish power at home and abroad.…

Born in December 4th, 1892 the young Spanish general and dictator of Spain ruled from 1939 and became known as the youngest general in Europe in the 1920s. During the general election of 1936 the ruling centre-right coalition collapsed amid the Straperlo corruption scandal and new elections were scheduled. The new coalitions formed were the Popular Front on the left, which ranged from the Republican Union Party to Communists, as well as the Frente Nacional on the right, which ranged from the center radicals to the conservative Carlists. On February 16th, 1936 the Popular Front won by a narrow margin. The days that followed the Popular Front had launched a campaign with the support of the government against Opposition whom they accused of plotting against the Republic. It was seen that Spain was in imminent danger of falling under a “Communist dictatorship”, and therefore it was seen that fighting against the democratically elected Popular Front they, the Opposition were merely doing their duty in defense of law and order and the freedom of the Spanish people.…
After their independence movements, Mexico and Brazil were politically similar in that they both turned into monarchies. Until 1820, Dom João VI, the king of Portugal, ruled his empire from Brazil after the French invasion. He left his son, Pedro I, as his successor and he declared Brazil’s independence in 1822, becoming the constitutional emperor and, therefore, making Brazil a monarchy. In Mexico, Agustín de Iturbide was proclaimed the first Emperor after leading Mexicans to victory and independence from Spain. The fact that he was a conservative contributed him being crowned emperor in 1822, developing a monarchy. He ruled the country for less than a year and was removed from power by General Antonio López de Santa Anna and was exiled to England. An analysis of this similarity shows it could have occurred because a monarchy was a solution to times of turmoil after Mexico and Brazil’s independence movements.…
