The king had all the power! Or so many thought. The will of the king is the law. Since they thought this, the king restrained through a way that’s called droit divin. The king wasn’t responsible for anyone and should do whatever he wanted. The French nation could in fact have no criticism. This way of ruling is called absolutism. He lived in a huge palace of Versailles that was near Paris. He wanted to live there so he could watch the nobility. The nobility didn’t mind, it made them important too. They filled their time with huge and expensive parties as well as hunting. These people are were of the second altitude.

The people attacked the Bastille the 14th of July 1789. The prisoners weren’t there but their was a huge weapon stock. They also captured the prison director. A couple months later were the queen and king captured. The French Revolution begun! The lieders of the revolution wanted to everyone to have a good life for everyone without a king. A land without monarchy and in 1791 their came a new rule: freedom, equality and association!
Years of terror
The revolution didn’t go fast enough for some rebels. They were willing to use violence in the process. Everyone who thought differently got killed by a guillotine! Their often wasn’t any proof. About 15.000 got killed in those years. The victims were mostly of the third altitude.
Napoleon
The rain of terror of Robespierre ended in 1794. He died the same way he killed all those victims. Under the guillotine. The nation got divided. Some even wanted a king to rule again while wanted to continue the revolution. Their was a short period were a civil war arose. Ten years after the attack on Bastille the citizens wanted peace. They hoped for a lieder that would help France to peace.
That man was Napoleon Bonaparte the general of the army that was wildly popular. --- There came new rules to end the chaos. That made France dictatorship and Napoleon the most powerfull man from Europe. He crowned himself in 1804
