Chapter five begins with the account of the aged indios ladino Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala who in 1615 with his young son took a manuscript he had been writing for over 30 years. This manuscript was remarkable in that it was written in both Castilian and his native Quechua. What is so remarkable about this is that the Incan language never developed an alphabet and it was not until 1560 that a Castilian-Quechua dictionary was released. Under colonial rule Spanish friars opened schools that taught Castilian which was the most common language in Spain. Spanish arts and Andean arts merged which lead to a distinctive culture that was neither Andean nor European. Indios Ladinos were indigenous people who had learned Castilian as well as their native tongue. They were the frist people of true mixed cultures and were extremely important because they were able to serve in many important jobs and showed the coming together of two cultures even when they had been born when Tawintinsuyu existed. Chapter six focuses on the spiritual conquest of the Andean world which although it was incomplete led to huge cultural and religious changes. Although the people accepted the trappings of Christianity such as the feasts, rituals, music, dances and prayers they viciously clung to their traditional rites and refused to give them up. This annoyed the clergy…
In the book, Red Kayak, by Priscilla Cummings, there are multiple themes. A theme is the main idea or underlying meaning of a literary work and it can be directly stated or implied. Being able to understand a theme is critical to decipher an author’s message. One of the numerous themes in Red Kayak is that death is everywhere and it can be very hard to deal with. In Red Kayak, Brady along with his friends, J.T. and Digger, live in the Chesapeake bay region of Maryland. All of them have great memories together and have been friends for a long time. Soon, rich people start moving in close proximity to where Brady and his parents live. This upsets families and friends (especially Digger). When Mrs. and Mr. DiAngelo move in, Brady discovers that…
Leon-Portilla based the stories told in the book upon old writings of actual Aztec people who survived the Spanish massacres. Many of the people who were in these writings were: priest, wise men and simply regular people. Most history of the Aztec empire are based of Spanish accounts of the events. this is why I feel this story is so special because it represents a realistic point of view coming from Aztec survivors. This story portrays the Spanish as horrible people. It shows the Spanish exploiting the Aztecs and even killing them for what they would like to say no reason. Simply it depicted how the Spanish would come through and brutally murder everyone . An example is when the Spanish sealed off the entrances to the palace so that no one could leave, then went through murdering anyone in sight.…
The dominant theme is still the comparisons of the two kingdoms. Like a good salesman, Cortés hammers home the fact of idol worship by the Aztecs, accompanied with the acts of human sacrifice and cannibalism. These are clear violations of Gods law. Acts that cannot be allowed. Cortés brings the point to bear off-handedly that it is the king’s duty to save these savages souls. He sales this fact splendidly playing on obvious moral standards recognized and enforced by king and…
have you ever been in love, the little feeling you get for someone but you tried but u never succeeded in convincing them into loving you too? In shakespeare they present a theme.A theme is a message that they try to explain in the reading but don't show it. The theme in A Midsummer night's dream by william shakespeare is control. In A Midsummer night's dream there are two character that show control. Along with its fantasy world, Game of Thrones series have consistently depicted real life themes and characters. Ultimately, Game of Thrones can be claimed as a series based on real world drama illustrated in a fantasy world. In the present world, “we all have knowledge, love/hate, scheming politics, sex, isolation.” (Game of Thrones - Interview with George R.R. Martin). Similarly, Game of Thrones’ storylines revolves around these themes, in order to generate a world similar to ours. For instance, the title of the show Game of Thrones, can be regarded as a metaphor of devious politician. It is reasonably straightforward that this “show is a perfect metaphor for scorched-earth style of politics in a deeply divided red state/blue state America.”…

Prejudice and superstition can lead to injustice. A good example of this is basically the whole story of To Kill a Mockingbird. Tom Robinson is prejudiced against because he is black and so even though he didn’t commit the crime he was accused of he was still sentenced for it. Even with the evidence they had supporting that Tom didn’t do it.…
Robert Penn Warren, in his novel All The King’s Men, examines the modern man’s quest to live a simple existence—a life, void of sin, in which man endeavors to discover truth. Jack Burden, the novel’s protagonist and narrator, is thrust onto the political scene when his managing editor instructs him to travel up to Mason City to “see who the hell that fellow Stark is who thinks he is Jesus Christ” (51). The comparison between Willie Stark, the governor of Louisiana, and Jesus Christ emerges as an important association because, even though Jack knows of Willie’s corruption and sin, he reveres Willie as a father figure; Jack’s search for the truth, the identity of his father, is one of the main crises in the novel. While Robert Penn Warren’s All The King’s Men is certainly a political commentary, religion plays an interesting role in the novel: Warren employs biblical and religious references to emphasize the convictions of certain characters and to explore the value of truth.…
There are various issues and themes presented in the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee and "The Rabbits" by John Marsden and illustrated by Shaun Tan. These themes are being smoothly conveyed through the use of different language techniques including complex metaphors, similes, hyperboles, imagery, personification and symbolism. Among the main themes used in the novels are courage, prejudice, hypocrisy, justice, education, social inequality, poverty and perspective.…
The actions of Macbeth and other characters show that appearances are misleading and Shakespeare created dialogue that constantly incorporates techniques that represent this duplicity. Equivocation is especially found in the line from Act 1 Scene 7: “False face must hide what the false heart doth know." Shakespeare uses repetition of the adjective false to link the appearance of the face and the heart. Macbeth’s facial expression is false as he is acting customary to the routine of everyday life, whilst in fact covering up the guilt of murder. Macbeth’s heart is false as he displays meaningful and authentic sorrow for the death of Duncan, a beloved King, when in fact he is the one who killed him and becomes King as a result. The word false links the face and the heart as aspects of Macbeth’s dishonesty. Another technique Shakespeare uses to create a sense of duplicity is irony, which is evident in the quote from Act 1 Scene 4. “There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face”. This was said by Duncan to his son about the courage of the Thane of Cawdor during his execution. Duncan makes this judgement quite casually and unemotionally, which is ironic for it is this very theory which is proved when Duncan himself is murdered. The irony is used to stress the significance of the issue of deception throughout the play.…
As you can see, Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of the most important Latin American novels to ever be written. The story depicts the life of what was once an ordinary town in Colombia forever changed by a murder which was inspired by a death of Marquez’s friend. He also displays the dominance men have over women and how the town expects both genders to behave. It is these reasons why I acknowledge why the book is not only of the most important books in Latin American literature, but one of the best ever…
To be king for a day is the central theme in "The King of Comedy" by Martin Scorsese, a black comedy that features Robert De Niro as Rupert Pupkin, an eccentric wannabe stand-up comic hell bent on achieving stardom. Pupkin idolizes talk show host Jerry Langford (played by Jerry Lewis) the proclaimed "King of Late Night." Pupkin's goal in life is to replace Langford becoming "The King of Comedy" hence the title. He believes himself to be a great comedian telling Langford (Lewis) in an early scene "I wouldn't take up even one minute of your time if I wasn't absolutely convinced of my talent. I'm really good, Jerry, believe me, I'm dynamite." However, this is a fallacy; Pupkin is actually a 31 year old natural-born loser and…
