The forbidden love of Romeo and Juliet is described using religious language, imagery of contrasting light and darkness, and nature; tragedy is emphasised by the imagery of death throughout the play; isolation can be seen in the language and actions of both the central characters, and loss is experienced in terms of both lost love, and loss of life, adding to the weight of the tragedy.…

The classic definition of a stakeholder is ‘any group or individual who can affect or is affected by the achievement of the organisation’s objectives’. At its broadest and most ambitious, the stakeholder concept represents a redefinition of all organisations: how they should be conceptualised and what they should be (Friedman and Miles, 2006, pp. 1–2). Yamak and Süer (2005, p. 111) state that CSR has emerged as a major topic following recent corporate scandals, which may also be interpreted as the demise of shareholder theory (a manager’s duty is to maximise shareholders’ returns) and the rise of stakeholder theory. The shareholder theory and the stakeholder theory are two patterns that stand out as…

There seems to be a notion that the professor makes a class great. Students who do not enjoy a particular subject can at least find a class engaging with the right kind of professor. In universities and colleges across the nation students have caught onto a system in which they can review professors and release these reviews to help future students make judgments and decisions of what classes to take with which professors. There are universal platforms, like RateMyProfessor.com as well as more school-specific platforms that provide such services. While these platforms assist countless numbers of students every semester, there are also some dangerous social traps that users of such services fall into. It is common knowledge that first impressions…

Primacy Effect is a cognitive bias that results from disproportionate salience of initial stimuli or observations. It is the tendency to remember well the first items, that will influence us more than the later information will. According to Solomon Asch (1946), “a glance, a few spoken words are sufficient to tell us a story about a highly complex matter” (pg. 258). Therefore, we often make our judgment of the person right from the first impressions. For example, if someone makes a good first impression the moment they meet you, you will tend to dismiss negative attributes shown later in the person. However, if someone were to make a bad first impression, they will have a hard time making a positive influence later on. In one study, the Asch had presented a list of six adjectives to a subject. It was revealed that subjects who had flattering descriptors were picked to be more likeable when their adjectives were in order from favorable to unfavorable. Therefore humans perceive the people around them by their independent trait.…

The biggest challenge faced by companies today is how to provide for the needs of the present generation without compromising the needs of the next generation. More and more governments are putting pressure on companies to have sustainable plans in place which impact positively on the environment and society. South Africa established the King Report in 2002, to establish the foundation for good CSR. No longer is it only about the bottom-line (profits) but also that companies’ need to be good corporate citizens. For companies to be successful they need healthy societies to thrive in. This means good education and healthcare systems and equal opportunities to provide a productive workforce. Pick n Pay one, of the first companies in South Africa to implement a CSR strategy has imbedded it in their vision and mission. PnP supports projects that encourage self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
