The Kite Runner takes place in winter of 1975 to 2001 and is about two boys who live to completely different lives, but live under the same roof. Amir lives in the most beautiful house in Kabul with his Baba and two servants Hassan and Ali. Amir was always trying to impress Baba and one day he finally succeed one day during the kite race that he competed in with the help of his friend Hassan. That day turned out to be the best and worst day of Amirs life after we won the kite race he witnessed his friend Hassan get raped by Assef the bully of the neighborhood. Assef wanted the kite that Him and Amir had just one the race with, and like a good friend that Hassan is he refused to give it up. Assef pulled out his brass knuckles, and raped Hassan. Amir watches the whole thing happen but doesnt try to stop it because he isn't brave enough to stand up to Assef like Hassan did. After the rape scene that Amir witnesses nothing is ever the same between Amir and Hassan. Amir tries everything to get Hassan to even do something remotely hurtful back so maybe some of the guilt goes away but Hassan refuses. (insert quote here)
The rape left Amir full or guilt and lead Amir to do stupid stuff that forever changes his and Babas life. Amir starts to realize that the quilt isn't going to go away and is only getting worse, and Amir feels that the only way the quilt is going to go away is if he gets rid of Hassan. (insert quote here) Amir places money and a watch under Hassans bed then informs his Baba that those things are missing. Baba confronts Amir about the situation thats going on and bring Hassan in the room and Hassan admits to it all. But why would Hassan do that when he didn't he do that? Because if he wouldn't of he would of had to tell them that Amir was a liar. All Baba wants is for Hassan to give the things back and apologize but Ali thinks its al becoming a little to much for him and Hassan need to move out and go their separate ways. Baba is upset and doesn't want this to happen but nothing he does or says make a difference and they still leave. That situation changed Amirs life forever.

As Hassan stood his ground in the alley and chooses to honor his promise to Amir and return the kite to him, Amir stood silent at the end of the alley and watched the beating and rape of his friend Hassan. The following quotation emphasizes how Amir is unworthy of Hassan’s loyalty: “I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be.
