“It may be unfair, but what happens in a few days, sometimes even a single day, can change the course of a whole lifetime”. The novel Kite Runner is filled with complications. Nearly every character would face some sort of physical or mental challenge during the extent of the novel. But does it always lead to or even in most cases, lead to personal growth and positive change. My opinion is Yes.
The Protagonist and Narrator Amir I believe faces such a wide range of challenges through every step of the novel. Amir lost his mother the day he was born, from that moment his whole life changed forever. The loss of that motherly figure leaves him behind with the critical and weak relationship between him and Baba. This meant Amir became attached to the next fatherly figure standing in line; this lucky man was Rahim Khan.
Relationships and Friendships are the strongest themes in the novel. It sparks the beginning of nearly every challenge faced by the main characters and with every challenge each relationship changes in a positive or negative way. It never just stays the same, there’s always some sort of change. For example, Hassan and Amir’s friendship. Even though Hassan was just a family servant Amir always had a soft spot for him. Hassan was the boy he always read his stories to, Hassan was the boy who always stood up for him, Hassan was the boy who could never lie to Amir, and Hassan was always there for him when ever he was needed. So naturally you would think, “yeah they should be good friends”, but unless your one of those people who only read the first 100 pages you’ll find that the statement is wrong and untrue.
Even though Hassan is with Amir nearly all the time events occur that push these two apart. The obvious occurrence was the rape of Hassan and the cowardly act of Amir to sit back and watch. Hassan faces complete humiliation and Amir faces the constant guilt for the rest of his life. Amir’s guilt and Hassan’s
