Kittur Fort is located in the small town of Kittur, located at a distance of about 50 km from the city of Belgaum and around 32 km from Dharwad. The fort is one of the major historical monuments in Karnataka and one of its famous tourist attractions. The small town of Kittur gained fame and recognition due to the presence of Kittur Fort and its immense historical significance.
The fort spreads over an area of about 23 acres and was built by Allppa Gowda Sar Desai the fifth ruler of Kittur dynasty during 1660-1691 A.D. The fort was built with small stones available in plenty in the surrounding region. The fort, however, was extensively damaged by Chaplin, the British Commissioner of Deccan region.
Kittur Fort is also known as Kittur Chennamma Fort as it is closely associated with Rani Chennamma, the brave ruler. The Fort stands as evidence of one of the first freedom struggles of the country that was led by Rani Chennamma. Kittur Fort also has a palace within it that is popularly known as Rani Chennamma’s palace.

The Kempe Gowda Museum is housed is the first floor of the heritage building of Mayo Hall. The museum is funded by the Government of Karnataka and the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) is responsible for its upkeep. A framed map of 18th century Bangalore forms the entire base of the main hall with the four corners of the room having tower shaped panels to symbolise the four watch towers (fixed boundaries) of earlier town.
