From the pH results recorded from the two water sources, we can clearly see that Kleinfontein Dam has the higher pH levels, which indicate poor and unsafe water conditions. From Article two, we can see that a High (7.5) or Low (5.5) pH level is very dangerous and harmful to humans who come in contact with the water. The pH Level recordings at 8 and 9 are extreme dangers if they were to come in to contact with humans and also they are way over the borders which is not acceptable at all.
The reason we have different pH levels recorded is due to the different pH tests been done at different parts of the dam. With the different parts of the water source there are now unsafe parts of recreational water in this dam, and this dam …show more content…
is a high concern to the water quality and should be looked at. What affects the pH level in a water source may be the bedrock and soil composition through which the water. Another factor is plant growth and organic material and dumping of chemicals into the water by individuals, industries, and communities. The last factor is amount of acid precipitation that falls into the watershed.
At Homestead Lake we see that the values are all very similar. The only value that would be a concern is that value at 7.5. With this value being just on the borderline it will be okay and won’t cause a great threat to the water quality. This water source has no serious affect from human activities. This dam has good pH levels and is safe for recreational use.
Temperature Readings:
From the readings that have been recorded from Kleinfontein Dam and Homestead Lake we can see that Homestead Lake is a lot cooler than Kleinfontein Dam on average. This could be because of the time of day the temperature was taken at different times during a day and this will play a big factor in the results. There may also be other factors that have because the temperature to be different at the dams is because Homestead Lake has a larger volume than Kleinfontein Dam, so therefore it will take much longer to heat up and longer to cool down. The other factor is that Kleinfontein dam has large particles in it and when they are heated the store heat for a long time and releases it slowly.
Homestead Lake is also a lot deeper than Kleinfontein dam and this will also cause a great influence in the temperatures. The deepness of a water source has a great influence as it will take longer for a body of water to heat up if it is deeper due to the volume of water it has to heat but if it were shallow it would be faster as there is less volume of water to heat up.
In a conclusion in the temperature of both water sources is that Kleinfontein Dam has a higher average temperature that could lead to it being an unhealthy water source but in the summer they say for temperature to range from 0 degrees Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius is a safe range.
None of these water sources temperatures are indicated unsafe water for recreation but these high temperatures may lead it to become and unsafe water source for recreation. If the water sources temperature is too high or too low it causes a threat to the aquatic life and plants, which may cause many of them to die and therefore it will pollute the water source which would cause a threat to …show more content…
humans.
Odour results from water Sources
In Article four it states that if a body of water has an uncomfortable or unpleasant odour they should remain away from it as it may cause great problems to the person and it is an unsafe water that is polluted.
What these results that were record tell us is that Kleinfontein Dam had a very unpleasant odour and very poor, whereas Homestead Lake was fair, so it has a bit of both good and bad smell. This is not good for both dams as majority of their odour is not good. In the Article four it states that the unpleasant odour smell might be due to dead plants and animals decaying.
However looking at the environment around both water sources, the unpleasant odours of both dams are due to pollution in the dam and especially with the unpleasant odour of Kleinfontein dam it is understandable that the main reason it has been polluted is due to the human population around the dam and the structures around the dam. The drainage area around Homestead Lake is very clean comparing to the Kleinfontein Dam. The surrounding area around Homestead Lake is a park and households.
This dam may receive an unpleasant Odour due to animals or plants degrading. The area is very clean surrounding the dam. Kleinfontein dam’s odour may come from many different reasons, but the main reason is from all the pollution from the area surrounding the dam. The area around this dam is a town, park and a high way. Another way the dam may have an unpleasant odour is because of all the dirt that washes off the highway into the dam through the drains. The pollution in theses dams are mainly plastics and cans which are not biodegradable. The other type of pollution is sewage in the water sources. When sewage is in the water it causes the water to have an unpleasant odour and this will then cause wildlife to start to die which will then cause the water source to have a really unpleasant odour. This evidence that was found might be proof to the hypothesis that humans have had an influence on water sources in South
Africa.
Chemical Testing Readings:
From these results from chemical testing that were done it is safe to say that both water source, samples contained no Nitrite, Ammonia and Nitrate.
This is a good indicator to the quality of water and it is still safe for human use. With the small amount of Nitrites it is a concern as it should be a little bit higher, and there should be an investigation on why it is so low in both water sources. Also too many Nitrates in a water source may be dangerous to the human if it is consumed, it may cause serious health problems. But with these low readings there are no concern and nothing to be worried about. The only concern with chemicals in the water is the low amount of nitrites in the water sources.
With this the conclusion is that both water sources are not safe for human recreation use due to the low results of nitrites it therefore potentially makes both water sources unsafe for human recreation use but the more concerning part would be the animal and plant life because of Nitrites.
