Knapps Relationship Model Essay
Knapp’s Relationship Model starts out with the differentiating stage. In this stage the couples see their differences as complementary or they see them as undesirable and annoying. The relationship I had with my boyfriend of three years was all about differences. I liked to listen to country music and he liked to listen to rock. I would wear cowboy boots he would wear sneakers. He likes spicy food and I like mild food. Sometimes we could agree and other times we couldn’t. So at some points those differences got to be annoying. But we would come together and make an agreement and say I could listen to country on the way to the store and then we would listen to rock on the way back. By making a compromise we start to bond again and can enjoy the car rides. I first met my boyfriend in high school in math class. We had the same group of friends so when one of our friends was having a party we would both go and that’s where we starting talking and getting to know each other. He did not ask me out right away he waited until we got back from our band …show more content…
The terminating stage is where the couples have both decided the relationship was not going to work. This was true for my relationship with my boyfriend of three years. I did not feel the connection between us anymore so I decided it was time that we went our separate ways. The good part was that we both still want to keep in touch; we ended on good terms which is always a positive. All relationships have their up’s and down’s and sometimes they just do not end up working out. In my case my relationship was based off of “opposites attract”, but this can only last so long before the differences start to take over. I feel Knapp hit the main parts of a relationship, and he explains everything. I can really relate to the different stages that he came up with, and I feel that most relationships take these steps. Relationships can be hard at times but they can also be

One piece of research into the breakdown of romantic relationships is from Duck (1982). According to his phase model of the breakup of a relationship, it all begins with the breakdown of the relationship where there is dissatisfaction within the relationship. These dissatisfied partners then begin to consider all the problems within the relationship, thinking mostly about the relational ‘costs’ which develops a resentment for the relationship. This is known as the intra-psychic phase. Once a threshold of being unable to withstand the relationship anymore, the dissatisfied partner expresses their uncertainties about the relationship and so the dyadic phase has been reached and the couple will re-assess their goals, possibilities and commitment. If this is not successful, the social phase has been reached where the decision to leave the relationship is made and is publically discussed between third parties. Next, self-justifications and version-makings of the breakup are offered, which is known as the grave-dressing phase. Finally, the individuals will attempt to recreate a sense of their own social values, by preparing for different types of future relationships and knowing what they wish to get out of them, known as the resurrection process.…

Knapp’s model of relationship development and deterioration is best suited to romantic relationships and is illustrated throughout the selected episode. It is also important to note, Knapp’s model can be adapted to describe processes of any relationship type. In the opening scene Robert is in the process of self assertion. After many years of living with his overbearing parents, he has moved into an apartment that he can call his own. He refers to it as the “happiest place on earth”. Robert’s girlfriend Amy arrives with excitement due to inference that Robert is ready to implement ‘the plan’. The plan is revealed as a verbal agreement. Once Robert moved into his own house they would get married and have four children. This exemplifies that information is lost in…

Initially , the first stage is breakdown , this is where one of the partners decides that they can't stand it any more and only when this dissatisfaction manifests itself into a complete reality check of 'I can't stand this any more' do we see a progression to the next stage of this stage theory. After the breakdown Rollie and Duck suggest that the second stage is something known as the intra-psychic process ; this is generally characterised as a social withdrawal and resentment with the dissatisfied partner focusing on their partners faults and a sense of being underbenifited. This normally coincides with a tendency to re-evaluate the relationship and consider alternatives.…

The very first step in relationships is initiating. The definition of initiating is “the stage of the relationship at which people meet and interact for the first time” (p. 188). In eleventh grade of high school I met this girl named Susie Walker. I met her through a mutual friend which was my best friend, Janna Horton. It was a sunny day outside and the two of them met each other and I just so happened to be with Janna. Janna introduced me to her and we began talking and got to know a little more about each other. We exchanged number for sense of communication as well. This ties back in the next in relationship development which is experimenting. The definition of experimenting is “the stage where people begin to converse and learn a little more about each other” (p. 188). After the day I met Susie, we started to hang out more. Every time I saw her around school I would speak. Soon we became friends. We started eating lunch together and talking and getting to know each other, learning our differences and seeing what we had in common. The next step in the development of relationships is the intensifying stage which is defined as “when people merge from being acquaintances to becoming close friends” (p. 188). As time…

When I first heard “When I Was Your Man,” the only thing that went through my mind were regrets as I remember how some of my relationships were in the past. Each and every time that I play the song, my opinions won’t change. According to Mark Knapp’s theory, there were ten stages to a relationship. The stages are initiating, experimenting, intensifying, integrating, bonding, differentiating, circumscribing, stagnating, avoiding, and terminating. I can definitely relate some of these stages to my past relationships.…

When it comes to relationships, having multiple relationships with a client can be disadvantage to client’s welfare and the quality of help provided by the therapist. There are various reasons to how this can happen when there is already an existing relationship in therapy between the client and the therapist. Dual relationships might occur when the therapist and the client know a mutual person which can cause both to know of each other. In some cases after the therapy ends the client and the therapist could become friends and may have an intimate relationship. These relationships can develop for various reasons while the client is still in therapy or they are already done. According to the AAMFT code of ethics; “Marriage and family therapist are aware of their influential positon with respect to clients, and they avoid exploiting the trust and dependency of such person” (AAMFT, Code of Ethics 1.3). In agreement this with law, it is understandable that being in multiple relationship with the client can impact the…

Relationships is what keep human beings connected, its one of the basic necessities of survival. There are many different types of relationships, however all of them require at least some form of commitment, understanding, and effort. The book “Real Communication: An Introduction” by Dan O’Hair and Mary Wiemann serves as a foundation to better ourselves in communication as well as relationships. I will be using the movie “Pineapple Express” (2008) produced by Judd Apatow and Shauna Robertson (IMDb), as an example of an Interpersonal realtionship. The story line focuses on Dale Denton a Process Server who is addicted to Marijuana and fellow drug dealer Saul Silver a gentle and compassionate young man. The movie follows the journey of these two acquaintances that develop an unlikely strong friendship through struggles in the face of danger. In this paper I will argue that Perception, Interaction appearance theory, and interpersonal communication are some of the most important factors in the process of creating and stabilizing relationships. To prove my argument I will discuss the effects of Interaction appearance and the relationship stages as it applies to the film.…
