PLEASE READ ALL OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. THEY WILL ANSWER MOST OF YOUR QUESTIONS.
1. You may walk on the operative leg with or without crutches as tolerated beginning the day of surgery. Be cautious of how much you do the first day or two after surgery as it is easy to overdo it. When resting, try to keep your knee as straight as possible. Do not place pillows beneath your knee keeping it rested in a bent position, but rather place pillows such that the leg is elevated in a straight position. A bent knee gets stiff and it becomes more difficult to move and straighten. If anything, keep a small towel beneath your heel to keep your knee straight.
2. Keep the postoperative dressing clean and dry. REMOVE BANDAGES THREE DAYS AFTER SURGERY. Leave any steri-strips in place and let them fall off naturally. You may shower after you remove the bandages on day three. DO NOT allow your knee to be submerged in water (swimming or baths) until after your post-operative visit with your doctor. You will be given a pain medicine prescription at the time of your pre-operative visit. You may go ahead and get this filled prior to your surgery but it is to be taken after you have surgery. If you have any know drug allergies, please make sure your nurse knows about this. Please note: We are unable to handle any requests for narcotics after normal business hours and on weekends. If you need a refill on pain medication, please call the office early enough to have your nurse process this request as you will have to pick it up from our office because narcotics cannot be faxed in or telephoned in to your pharmacy. Some mediations do have side effects. If you have any difficult with itching, nausea, or other side effects, discontinue the medication immediately and call our office. Pain medications can cause drowsiness and we advise that you do not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions while taking this
